Sivasagar flood relief aid has reached around 30,000 of the 37,000 flood-hit families in the Sivasagar Assembly constituency, MLA Akhil Gogoi said on August 28, highlighting both progress in disbursement and the thousands of households still waiting for assistance. Gogoi said he would meet Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the pending payments and seek further support for affected families.
30,000 families receive Rs 15,000 assistance
According to Gogoi, about 30,000 families have received the state government’s one-time assistance of Rs 15,000, while around 7,000 families are yet to receive the payment. The figures point to a significant expansion in the distribution process after weeks of complaints over delays and alleged discrepancies in beneficiary lists.
The assistance was announced for families affected by the recent floods in Assam. However, Gogoi has repeatedly argued that the amount is inadequate compared with the losses suffered by households whose homes, agricultural activities, livestock and other assets were damaged.
The latest update on Sivasagar flood relief aid comes after sustained political pressure from the Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president.
Pending payments remain a concern
The distribution of Sivasagar flood relief aid has been a major point of contention between Gogoi and the district administration in recent weeks. On August 25, Gogoi gave the Assam government a 48-hour deadline to release pending assistance, warning that affected residents could march towards Guwahati if the payments were not cleared.
Thousands of flood-affected residents had gathered at a rally in Sivasagar to demand the immediate release of the promised assistance. Gogoi questioned the delay, arguing that financial support described as emergency or urgent relief should reach beneficiaries much earlier.
The MLA has also faced criticism from administrative employees over his approach to the relief distribution issue. Government employees in Sivasagar staged a protest after allegations that Gogoi misbehaved with the district administration during discussions over the beneficiary list. The allegations have added another layer to the ongoing dispute over relief distribution.
Gogoi seeks higher compensation
While welcoming the release of Sivasagar flood relief aid to thousands of families, Gogoi has maintained that Rs 15,000 cannot adequately compensate households facing serious losses.
Earlier this month, he demanded Rs 10 lakh for every flood-affected family. He said many residents had lost homes, household belongings and sources of income, making the existing assistance insufficient for recovery.
Gogoi also sought stronger financial intervention from the Centre. In a 22-point charter submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he urged the government to declare the floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat a national disaster and provide additional funds for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
He also demanded a Rs 1,000-crore reconstruction package for Sivasagar and Nazira, along with assistance for farmers, fisheries, livestock rearers, small tea growers, handloom workers and other affected groups.
Flood damage goes beyond immediate relief
The debate over Sivasagar flood relief aid has expanded beyond the Rs 15,000 payment. Gogoi has argued that the flood damage requires a long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction programme.
The July floods affected large parts of Upper Assam, damaging houses, roads, agricultural land and other infrastructure. In Sivasagar, residents faced prolonged waterlogging and disruption to daily life.
Gogoi has also called for a probe into the causes of the flooding. He has alleged that illegal mining and other activities contributed to the severity of the disaster. These remain allegations made by the MLA and would require investigation and verification.
Government agencies, meanwhile, have continued relief and restoration work across affected areas. Authorities have also been assessing damage and processing assistance for eligible beneficiaries.
Pressure mounts over remaining beneficiaries
The latest figures suggest that most identified families have now received Sivasagar flood relief aid, but the remaining 7,000 households remain a key concern. Gogoi has warned that further agitation could follow if the pending assistance is not released.
The MLA is also expected to raise the issue of larger compensation during his meeting with the chief minister. His demand reflects the wider concern among flood-affected residents that immediate financial assistance alone may not be enough to restore homes, livelihoods and damaged property.
As the state continues its recovery from the floods, the focus in Sivasagar is now shifting towards completing payments to all eligible families and ensuring that longer-term rehabilitation reaches those who suffered the greatest losses. The government faces pressure to close the gap between announced relief and actual recovery needs while maintaining transparency in beneficiary selection and disbursement.
