Rajasthan Royals’ leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal became the first bowler ever to reach 200 wickets in the tournament. This remarkable feat was accomplished during the IPL 2024 match between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 22, 2024.

Chahal’s historic milestone came in the eighth over of Mumbai Indians’ innings when he dismissed all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. The delivery, a flighted leg-break, induced Nabi to mistime a flick shot, resulting in a simple return catch to Chahal. This wicket marked his 200th in the IPL, a testament to his consistency and skill over the years.

Having made his IPL debut in 2013 with Mumbai Indians, Chahal’s journey has been nothing short of exceptional. He rose to prominence during his tenure with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he became the franchise’s highest wicket-taker. In 2022, he joined Rajasthan Royals and continued his stellar performances, including winning the Purple Cap in his first season with the franchise. As of the 2024 season, Chahal has taken over 60 wickets for Rajasthan Royals, placing him among the top wicket-takers for the team.

Chahal’s achievement surpasses the previous record held by Dwayne Bravo, who retired with 183 wickets from 161 matches. Other notable bowlers on the all-time list include Piyush Chawla with 182 wickets, Bhuvneshwar Kumar at 174, and Amit Mishra with 173 wickets. Sunil Narine, a prominent spinner for Kolkata Knight Riders, stands at 172 wickets, sharing the position with Ravichandran Ashwin.

Beyond the IPL, Chahal has been a pivotal figure in India’s limited-overs formats. He is the leading wicket-taker for India in T20 Internationals, with 96 wickets in 79 innings. His overall T20 career boasts 348 wickets in 297 matches, underscoring his prowess in the shortest format of the game.

The cricketing fraternity has lauded Chahal’s achievement. Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri praised his consistency, while veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan dubbed him the “Sultan of Wickets” in the IPL. Former RCB teammate AB de Villiers also congratulated Chahal, acknowledging him as the “king of bowling in the IPL.”

Chahal’s journey from a debutant to the most successful bowler in IPL history is a testament to his dedication, skill, and adaptability. As he continues to play a pivotal role for Rajasthan Royals, fans and experts alike will be eager to see how many more records he can set in the years to come.
