Tawang Tourism Mart is set to put Arunachal Pradesh’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and tourism potential in the international spotlight as the Himalayan town prepares to host the 14th edition of the International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026. Scheduled from October 27 to November 1, the major tourism event is expected to bring representatives from around 20 countries, along with tourism professionals, investors, travel operators and media personnel. The event will provide Arunachal Pradesh with an important platform to attract international visitors and strengthen its position as a leading tourism destination.
Tawang Tourism Mart to welcome international delegates
The six-day International Tourism Mart will be jointly organised by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The event aims to showcase the distinctive attractions of Northeast India to domestic and international audiences.
The participation of international delegates is expected to create opportunities for tourism partnerships, business networking and investment. Tour operators and travel trade representatives will get an opportunity to explore destinations across Arunachal Pradesh and understand the state’s tourism offerings.
According to recent reports, around 20 countries are expected to receive invitations, including China. However, the final list of participating foreign representatives remains subject to confirmation.
The event is particularly significant because it brings an international tourism gathering to Tawang after more than a decade. The district last hosted the International Tourism Mart in 2013.
Preparations gather pace ahead of October event
Preparations for the 14th edition began several months before the scheduled event. A preliminary coordination meeting was held at the Tawang Circuit House in July to develop a roadmap for its successful organisation.
Officials from the Union Tourism Ministry, the state Tourism Department and district administration discussed accommodation, transportation, security, hospitality, venue arrangements and event management.
A team from the Ministry of Tourism and the state department also inspected the Guwahati-Tawang route to assess logistical requirements. The team visited important facilities, including Vivanta Tawang, Kalawangpo Convention Hall and PTSO, to evaluate their readiness.
Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona also chaired a preparatory-cum-review meeting in September. The meeting examined arrangements relating to security, transportation, accommodation, logistics, protocol and coordination among different departments.
Sona described the event as an important opportunity to present Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism potential, culture and hospitality to a wider national and international audience.
Showcasing Himalayan beauty and Monpa heritage
Tawang offers several attractions that make it an important destination for cultural, spiritual and nature-based tourism.
The region is known for its spectacular Himalayan landscapes, snow-covered mountains, scenic valleys and high-altitude lakes. These natural attractions provide opportunities for sightseeing, trekking, photography and adventure tourism.
Its cultural identity is equally important. The Monpa community has a rich heritage reflected in its traditions, festivals, handicrafts, food and religious practices.
One of the region’s most recognised landmarks is the historic Tawang Monastery. It is an important centre of Buddhist learning and spiritual heritage. The monastery attracts pilgrims, researchers and visitors interested in the region’s religious traditions.
Other attractions include the Giant Buddha Statue, Panga Teng Tso Lake and the surrounding mountain landscapes.
Through the tourism mart, organisers aim to introduce these destinations and experiences to travel businesses that can help develop new domestic and international tourism packages.
New opportunities for Arunachal’s tourism industry
The International Tourism Mart is expected to benefit more than the hospitality sector. Local tour operators, transport providers, homestay owners, artisans, guides and small businesses could also gain from increased tourism activity.
International travel companies will have opportunities to interact with local businesses and explore possible partnerships. Such connections can help improve destination visibility and encourage longer stays.
The event could also support investment in accommodation, transport facilities, tourism infrastructure and visitor services.
However, long-term benefits will depend on how effectively the state converts international exposure into actual tourist arrivals and sustainable business opportunities.
Improving road connectivity, maintaining visitor facilities and ensuring reliable services will remain important for the growth of tourism in remote mountain destinations such as Tawang.
Focus on sustainable and responsible tourism
As visitor interest increases, protecting the region’s natural environment and cultural traditions will be essential.
Tawang’s fragile mountain ecosystem requires responsible tourism practices. Unplanned construction, waste generation and excessive pressure on popular destinations could affect the area’s natural character.
Local communities also have an important role in tourism development. Their participation can help preserve traditional knowledge, promote local products and ensure that tourism income reaches people living in the region.
The tourism mart therefore offers an opportunity to promote responsible travel alongside commercial tourism development.
For Arunachal Pradesh, the upcoming international gathering represents more than a tourism promotion exercise. It offers a chance to connect local destinations with global travel markets, attract investment and create new opportunities for communities.
With its combination of Himalayan scenery, Buddhist heritage and Monpa traditions, Tawang has considerable potential to attract visitors from across the world. The success of the October event could strengthen the state’s tourism profile and open new avenues for sustainable economic growth.
