180 kmph while you sleep! India's latest Vande Bharat sleeper marks new era. Check fares, features

Indian Railways is entering a golden age of overnight travel. On January 1, 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the completion of trials for the highly anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train. This new marvel of engineering achieved a staggering speed of 180 kmph during its final high-speed tests on the Kota-Nagda section. Designed to redefine long-distance journeys, the train promises a blend of high speed, safety, and luxury that rivals international standards.

The inaugural service will connect Guwahati in Assam to Howrah in West Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off this historic run in the second half of January 2026. For the first time, passengers can board a train in the evening and wake up hundreds of kilometers away after a smooth, silent, and incredibly fast journey.

Fares Built for the Middle Class

The government has designed the fare structure to be competitive yet affordable. While the service offers premium amenities, the prices remain significantly lower than air travel on the same route. For the Guwahati to Howrah journey, the Vande Bharat sleeper train features and fares are structured into three distinct categories:

    • AC 3-Tier: Approximately ₹2,300 (inclusive of meals)
    • AC 2-Tier: Approximately ₹3,000 (inclusive of meals)
    • First Class AC: Approximately ₹3,600 (inclusive of meals)

Compared to flight tickets that often range between ₹6,000 and ₹10,000, this train provides a cost-effective alternative. It targets students, business travelers, and families who seek comfort without the high cost of a last-minute flight.

    World-Class Features and Passenger Comfort

The Vande Bharat sleeper is not just a modified version of the existing chair car; it is a completely new breed of train. Every detail, from the suspension to the lighting, has been re-engineered for overnight rest. The 16-coach rake includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one elite First Class AC coach.

One of the standout Vande Bharat sleeper train features is the advanced suspension system. During trials, a glass of water remained perfectly still even as the train crossed 180 kmph. This stability ensures that passengers can sleep soundly without the jerks and vibrations typical of older trains.

    Other key amenities include:

    • Ergonomic Berths: Improved cushioning and wider beds for a hotel-like experience.
    • Bio-Vacuum Toilets: Aircraft-style modular toilets with odor control and anti-spill washbasins.
    • Hot Showers: Exclusive shower facilities available for First Class AC passengers.
    • Climate Control: Integrated air-conditioning with UV-C disinfectant technology to kill 99.9% of germs.
    • Regional Cuisine: Passengers will enjoy local delicacies, such as Assamese dishes from Guwahati and Bengali flavors from Kolkata.

Safety and Technology at the Core

Safety remains the top priority for the Indian Railways. The Vande Bharat sleeper comes equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system. This indigenous technology prevents accidents by automatically applying brakes if it detects another train on the same track.

The train also features fire detection and aerosol-based suppression systems. For security, every coach has CCTV surveillance and an emergency talk-back unit. This allows passengers to communicate directly with the loco pilot or train manager in case of an emergency. The aerodynamic exterior and fully sealed gangways further reduce noise and improve energy efficiency through regenerative braking.

    The Future of Overnight Travel

The Guwahati-Howrah route is just the beginning of a massive rollout. The Ministry of Railways plans to introduce 12 more Vande Bharat sleeper sets by the end of 2026. Eventually, over 200 such trains will crisscross the country, connecting major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

These trains represent the “Make in India” spirit, with major components designed and manufactured locally by BEML and the Integral Coach Factory. As the nation moves toward a faster, cleaner, and more comfortable rail network, the Vande Bharat sleeper stands as a symbol of progress. It offers a future where distance is no longer a barrier to a good night’s sleep.
