Sting energy drink cleared after Meghalaya’s swift review

Sting energy drink sales have resumed in Meghalaya after the state Food Safety Department withdrew an interim statewide freeze, following an inquiry that found no causal relationship between the beverage and the reported death of a student. The restriction had been imposed as a precaution amid concerns over the safety of the caffeinated drink.

Meghalaya withdraws statewide restriction

The Commissionerate of Food Safety, Meghalaya, issued the withdrawal order on August 15, one day after the temporary restriction was introduced. The original order had stopped the sale, stocking and distribution of Sting across the state while authorities examined concerns surrounding the reported incident.

The decision followed reports in local media about the student’s death and representations calling for an investigation into whether the beverage had any connection with the incident. Authorities had said the freeze was a precautionary measure while the facts were being verified.

Following the inquiry, the Food Safety Officer who examined the circumstances submitted a report dated August 14. The report stated that it did not establish any causal relationship between consumption of the Sting energy drink and the reported death.

Based on that finding and the material available to the department, the Commissionerate decided there was no basis to continue the interim restriction. The order, issued by Commissioner of Food Safety Dr Joram Beda, said the statewide freeze stood withdrawn with immediate effect.

Inquiry clears alleged link to student’s death

The inquiry is significant because the temporary action had been triggered by public concern over an alleged link between the student’s death and consumption of the Sting energy drink.

However, the Food Safety Department has made a distinction between withdrawing the restriction and certifying the product as completely safe. Its order specifically stated that the withdrawal was based on the findings of the inquiry into the reported incident.

The department also clarified that its decision should not be viewed as an adverse finding or as a special certification or endorsement of the product or its manufacturer. It further said the earlier restriction did not amount to a finding that Sting had caused or contributed to the death.

This clarification is important as the original freeze was not based on a final finding against the beverage. Instead, it was a temporary precaution intended to allow authorities to examine the allegations before taking a longer-term decision.

Food safety checks will continue

Although the restriction has been withdrawn, Meghalaya’s food safety authorities have not ended their regulatory oversight of the beverage. The department said routine surveillance, sampling and enforcement activities will continue for food products across the state.

The move means the withdrawal of restrictions on the Sting energy drink should not be interpreted as an end to food safety monitoring. Food business operators remain required to comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with applicable regulations governing the sale and distribution of food and beverages.

The earlier freeze had covered manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, vendors and online delivery platforms. Existing stocks were also ordered to be isolated while the temporary restriction remained in force.

Why the freeze was imposed

The original restriction came after the Achik State Peoples’ Front sought action following the reported death of a student in Garo Hills. The organisation raised concerns about the accessibility of caffeinated beverages among children and adolescents and called for authorities to examine the product’s ingredients, caffeine content and statutory warnings.

The government subsequently adopted a precautionary approach and ordered a temporary freeze while the matter was examined. The action also reflected wider concerns about the consumption of energy drinks among younger people.

The Sting energy drink restriction therefore lasted only briefly. The inquiry report provided the basis for the state to reverse the precautionary measure instead of continuing a statewide prohibition.

What the decision means for consumers

With the freeze withdrawn, retailers and other food business operators can resume normal commercial activity involving the beverage, subject to existing food safety requirements.

The Meghalaya government’s latest decision also highlights the importance of separating allegations from established findings. While the reported student death prompted concern and regulatory action, the inquiry did not find evidence establishing a causal connection with the Sting energy drink.

For consumers, particularly young people, the episode serves as a reminder that questions surrounding caffeinated beverages should be assessed through verified medical and food safety findings rather than unconfirmed claims. Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s Food Safety Department is expected to continue routine monitoring of products sold across the state.

The withdrawal brings the immediate dispute over the Sting energy drink to a close, but the department’s clarification makes clear that the decision concerns the specific inquiry and does not amount to a blanket endorsement of the product or its manufacturer.
