The 76th Cannes Film Festival witnessed a momentous occasion as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L Murugan, inaugurated the India Pavilion, showcasing the country’s rich and diverse film industry. Highlighting India’s “timeless tradition of storytelling,” Murugan emphasized the increasing recognition of Indian talent worldwide.
During his speech, Murugan proudly pointed out the significant presence of Indians in Hollywood films, particularly in the fields of visual effects (VFX) and animation. He attributed this achievement to India’s robust creative economy, positioning the nation to become a global leader in content creation.
The minister further acknowledged the success of Kartiki Gonsalves’ short documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers,’ which recently won an Oscar. Set in Mudumalai, near Murugan’s hometown, the film touched the hearts of audiences worldwide, underscoring the universal appeal of Indian storytelling.
Among the dignitaries present at the event were Guneet Monga, the producer of ‘The Elephant Whisperers,’ and actors Vijay Varma and Sara Ali Khan. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur also addressed the attendees through a recorded video message, emphasizing the importance of India’s film industry.
In addition to the inauguration, Minister Murugan unveiled the poster for the upcoming 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), scheduled to take place in Goa in November. The poster reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Indian cinema, capturing the essence of the event.
Guillaume Esmiol, the executive director of the Cannes Marche du Film, expressed his appreciation for the growing connection between Indian cinema and the global movie business. He recognized India’s significance for the festival, highlighting its increasing prominence on the international stage.
Jawed Ashraf, India’s ambassador to France and the Principality of Monaco, delivered a keynote address, stating that cinema is deeply intertwined with the lives of the Indian people. Ashraf emphasized that the Indian film industry plays a role similar to that of diplomats, spreading India’s cultural influence worldwide. He also highlighted India’s position as a hub for digital content, expressing confidence in the country’s ability to lead the impending AI revolution.
The India Pavilion, designed by the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, featured a captivating blend of colors inspired by the Hindu goddess of learning, Saraswati, and the Indian national flag. The Pavilion served as a testament to India’s cultural richness and its emergence as a global powerhouse in cinema.
