To improve urban mobility, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday inaugurated the newly built Rukminigaon Flyover Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati. The ceremony took place in the evening, attracting a large crowd of officials, local leaders, and citizens.
A Key Infrastructure Boost
The Bhagadatta Flyover-2, popularly known as the Rukminigaon Flyover, stretches 660 metres. It is a four-lane flyover constructed at a cost of Rs 112 crore.
“This flyover is not just concrete and steel. It’s a symbol of Assam’s growth and modernisation,” said Sarma while addressing the gathering.
Easing Traffic Woes in Guwahati
The flyover sits on the Dispur–Six Mile corridor, one of Guwahati’s busiest stretches.
“This new route will help ease traffic congestion, save time, and reduce pollution,” said Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, who accompanied the CM.
Daily commuters have often faced long traffic jams along this corridor. The new flyover promises smoother connectivity between vital areas like Dispur, Ganeshguri, and Six Mile.

Sarma said the Rukminigaon Flyover is part of his government’s larger mission to transform Guwahati into a smart city.
“Assam deserves world-class infrastructure. Our people should travel safely and quickly. The Rukminigaon Flyover Himanta Biswa Sarma project reflects that vision,” he said.
Quick Timeline of Construction
Officials noted that the flyover project was completed in record time despite challenges such as heavy monsoons.
Construction began in 2023 and was carried out by Assam Public Works Department (PWD) and local contractors.
Economic Impact
Analysts believe that improved road infrastructure like the Rukminigaon Flyover Himanta Biswa Sarma project will boost economic activities in surrounding localities.
“Better traffic flow means better business opportunities, higher property values, and job creation,” said urban planning expert Dr. Arup Barman from Gauhati University.
Local traders expressed hope that customer footfall would improve once traffic congestion eases.
Citizens Share Their Views
Citizens at the event expressed relief and excitement.
“I used to waste an hour daily in traffic. Now it will take just minutes,” said Priya Das, a local resident.
Another commuter, Rakesh Nath, added, “This flyover is a blessing for us. It’ll reduce fuel costs and save time.”
Future Infrastructure Plans
The Chief Minister also hinted at more such projects.
“Guwahati needs at least 10 more flyovers to match its growth. We’re already planning flyovers at Jalukbari, Maligaon, and Khanapara,” said Sarma.
The state government has allocated significant budget funds to urban infrastructure under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Programme.
Sustainability Efforts
Interestingly, the Rukminigaon Flyover includes green features.
“We’ve ensured LED lighting and eco-friendly materials wherever possible,” said an official from the PWD.
Plans are underway to install vertical gardens along the flyover’s pillars to enhance the city’s aesthetics.

“Flyovers belong to all of us. Let’s maintain cleanliness and follow traffic rules,” he said.
