Assam Agitation Heroes Remembered on Swahid Divas
Guwahati, Assam – Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid homage to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation on Swahid Divas, honoring Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the movement, along with over 850 others who sacrificed their lives during the struggle against illegal infiltration.
Taking to X, Sarma said, “Their love for Aai Asomi (Mother Assam) will always inspire us as we remember their supreme sacrifice today.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commemorated the heroes of the Assam Movement, lauding their courage and reaffirming his government’s commitment to preserving Assam’s cultural heritage and supporting the state’s development.

Swahid Smarak Inaugurated to Honor Assam Agitation Martyrs
In a ceremonial event, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Swahid Smarak at Boragaon, a memorial built at a cost of Rs 170 crore to honor the martyrs of the 1979-85 Assam Agitation. The sprawling memorial features a prayer hall, an auditorium, water bodies, a cycle track, and a sound and light show depicting Assam’s struggle and rich heritage.
Addressing the gathering, Sarma described the memorial as a symbol of the Assamese people’s determination to uphold their dignity and as a source of inspiration for future generations. “This memorial is a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of our martyrs, whose spirit continues to guide Assam towards progress,” he said.
Statewide Observance of Swahid Divas
Swahid Divas was observed across all districts and sub-divisional headquarters with various events, reflecting the state’s collective respect for its martyrs. Cabinet ministers and members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), the principal organization that led the agitation, also participated in a special prayer meeting at the memorial.
The memorial’s design and facilities aim to educate visitors about the Assam Agitation, offering an immersive experience that highlights the historical struggle against illegal immigration while celebrating the cultural identity of Assam. The sound and light show vividly narrates the timeline of the movement, paying tribute to those who laid down their lives for the state.
