Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong warning against the Bir Lachit Sena, hinting at a possible ban on the organization after one of its members was allegedly involved in a recent abduction case. The Chief Minister said that the state government will not tolerate any attempt to create lawlessness or instill fear among citizens under the guise of regional activism.
Sarma’s comments came after police arrested several individuals connected to the group for allegedly kidnapping a local businessman in upper Assam. The Chief Minister, known for his firm stance on maintaining law and order, said that the incident exposed the organization’s growing involvement in criminal activities.

CM Sarma issues stern warning
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state would not hesitate to take stringent action against Bir Lachit Sena if it continues to engage in unlawful activities. “We have received reports of intimidation, extortion, and now an abduction. Assam cannot allow such groups to destabilize peace,” he said.
Sarma clarified that while the government supports freedom of expression, it will act firmly when any organization crosses legal boundaries. “No one is above the law. The government will not permit anyone to misuse the name of Lachit Borphukan, a revered Assamese hero, for personal or political motives,” he added.
The Chief Minister’s statement follows a string of recent incidents where individuals claiming to represent Bir Lachit Sena allegedly harassed business owners and government officials. These actions, according to the police, are attempts to spread fear and collect money under the pretext of protecting Assamese culture and identity.
Police intensify investigation
Following the abduction case, Assam Police have stepped up their investigation into the organization’s activities. Director General of Police (DGP) G. P. Singh confirmed that multiple raids were carried out in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia districts to locate members suspected of involvement in criminal acts.
Police sources revealed that the businessman was safely rescued within hours of the incident, thanks to the swift response of law enforcement agencies. The accused were reportedly linked to a network that operated under the Bir Lachit Sena’s name to extort money.
The DGP stated that the police would continue their crackdown to ensure that no unlawful outfit threatens public peace. “Assam Police will not allow any self-proclaimed group to take the law into its own hands. Every member involved in the crime will face strict action,” Singh said.
Authorities are also examining the organization’s leadership structure and financial sources. Several bank transactions and communications are under scrutiny to determine whether external forces are influencing the group’s activities.
Political reactions and public concern
The incident has sparked widespread debate in Assam’s political circles. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has backed the Chief Minister’s hard stance, opposition parties have urged the government to ensure due process before imposing any ban.
Congress leader Debabrata Saikia said that while the law must take its course, the government should avoid politicizing the issue. “If the organization has committed crimes, the individuals responsible must be punished. However, banning a group without proper investigation could set a wrong precedent,” he commented.
Civil society organizations and student groups have also expressed concern over the incident. Many have called for the preservation of Assamese identity through peaceful and lawful means, warning that violence and intimidation will only damage the state’s image.
Meanwhile, ordinary citizens have voiced support for the government’s strong action. Many believe that the rise of radical elements under cultural banners threatens Assam’s long-standing tradition of peace and inclusivity.
Bir Lachit Sena under scrutiny
Formed in 2023, the Bir Lachit Sena describes itself as a nationalist group aiming to protect the rights and culture of the Assamese people. However, its aggressive tactics and controversial statements have often drawn criticism.
Named after the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, who led the historic victory against the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat, the group has often portrayed itself as a modern-day protector of Assamese pride. Yet, its involvement in alleged acts of extortion, vandalism, and now abduction has tarnished its image.
Chief Minister Sarma pointed out that using the name of a national hero to justify criminal acts was unacceptable. “Lachit Borphukan stood for courage and discipline, not lawlessness. Those who misuse his legacy will face legal consequences,” he remarked.
Upholding law and restoring peace
The state government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting citizens from intimidation. Sarma directed the Home Department to monitor the activities of all registered and unregistered organizations in the state to ensure none operate outside the law.
He emphasized that Assam’s development depends on stability and cooperation among its people. “We cannot allow chaos to derail progress. Our priority is to ensure every citizen feels safe,” the Chief Minister stated.
Officials have also been asked to strengthen community policing efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation and reduce tensions in vulnerable areas. Local administrations are coordinating with village committees to promote awareness about reporting illegal activities.
Balancing culture with accountability
While acknowledging the importance of preserving Assamese culture, Sarma reminded citizens that true patriotism lies in peace and progress. He urged youths not to be misled by groups promoting hatred or fear in the name of identity.
“The best tribute we can pay to our ancestors is by building a peaceful, prosperous Assam. Development and discipline must go hand in hand,” he said.
As the investigation unfolds, the state government remains firm in its approach to ensuring that no organization undermines law and order. The message is clear—Assam will protect its culture, but not at the cost of its peace.
