The Bimol Congress controversy has intensified after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) questioned the All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) silence over allegations against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. The controversy has escalated following Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) decision to dismiss Akoijam from his position as a professor after an internal inquiry into sexual harassment complaints. The BJP has demanded disciplinary action against the Inner Manipur MP, raising questions about the Congress leadership’s response and accountability.
BJP questions Congress leadership over Bimol Akoijam
The BJP has accused the Congress leadership of failing to respond adequately to the allegations against Akoijam. Party leaders have questioned whether Congress intends to take disciplinary action against the sitting MP, particularly after JNU terminated his employment following its internal inquiry.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj has publicly criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the party’s response. She called for strict action against Akoijam, including his immediate suspension from the party, and questioned the apparent silence of senior Congress leaders.
The BJP has argued that political parties must demonstrate accountability when serious allegations emerge against their members. The Bimol Congress controversy has consequently become a political issue, with the opposition party using the case to challenge Congress’s position on women’s safety and its approach to allegations of misconduct.
BJP leaders have also questioned whether Congress is applying its stated principles consistently when allegations involve its own elected representatives.
JNU dismissal brings allegations into focus
The controversy gained momentum after JNU dismissed Akoijam from his teaching position on October 9, 2026. He had been associated with the university’s School of Social Sciences.
According to reports, 11 female students had filed complaints against him in May. The university conducted an inquiry through its Internal Committee under the framework of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act.
JNU’s decision to terminate his employment brought renewed attention to the allegations and prompted demands for further action from political leaders.
However, the university’s employment decision and the criminal investigation are separate processes. The allegations remain subject to the applicable legal procedures, and their criminal implications must be determined through the relevant authorities and courts.
The Bimol Congress controversy has therefore raised questions not only about the university’s disciplinary proceedings but also about the political consequences for a sitting member of Parliament.
Congress faces demands for disciplinary action
The BJP has pressed Congress to clarify its position on Akoijam and explain whether the party will initiate disciplinary proceedings.
Bansuri Swaraj has questioned Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders over their response to the case. The BJP has argued that the party should communicate clearly about the allegations instead of allowing uncertainty to continue.
The demand has added pressure on the AICC at a time when the matter has attracted national attention. The BJP has also linked the controversy to Congress’s public messaging on women’s rights and the protection of women.
Nevertheless, questions about the party’s internal disciplinary response must be distinguished from the legal process. Any decision by Congress to suspend or otherwise discipline Akoijam would be a party-level measure and would not, by itself, determine criminal liability.
As of the latest reports available on October 16, a definitive public clarification from the AICC addressing the BJP’s demands was not established in the sources reviewed.
Bimol Akoijam rejects allegations and alleges political vendetta
Akoijam has rejected the allegations and challenged the university administration’s account of the inquiry. He has described the proceedings as a politically motivated campaign intended to silence his criticism of the BJP and its handling of issues affecting Manipur and the Northeast.
He has also disputed claims that he failed to cooperate with the inquiry. According to his statements reported by the media, he submitted a written response on May 31, appeared before the inquiry panel on July 16 and said eight witnesses presented their depositions on August 14.
Akoijam has questioned the university’s account of the communications exchanged during the proceedings and indicated that he intends to challenge the process legally.
His objections have introduced another dimension to the dispute, with the MP contesting the fairness of the inquiry while the university has maintained that its decision followed due process.
The Bimol Congress controversy continues to develop amid these competing claims, making it important to distinguish the university’s findings, the MP’s response and the outcome of any criminal investigation.
Police investigation adds to political pressure
The case has also moved beyond the university and political arena. Delhi Police registered a first information report on October 11 in connection with the allegations, following a complaint lodged by JNU’s chief security officer.
Police proceedings are separate from the university’s disciplinary action. Any findings of criminal wrongdoing will depend on the investigation and the applicable judicial process.
The BJP has used the developments to renew its demand for action against Akoijam and a clear response from Congress. The party’s criticism has also prompted wider debate about the responsibilities of political organisations when allegations against elected representatives become public.
For Congress, the issue presents a challenge involving party accountability, due process and public confidence.
The coming days may prove significant for the Bimol Congress controversy, particularly if the AICC issues a formal statement or announces disciplinary measures. Until then, the BJP’s demand for clarity remains central to the political debate, while the allegations and the MP’s counterclaims continue to be contested through separate institutional and legal processes.
