In a development from Assam, the Bodo National Students Union (BoNSU) has demanded Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s immediate intervention in the alleged BTC education scam. The organization has accused senior officials in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Education Department of corruption and malpractice, calling for a swift and transparent investigation.

BoNSU Alleges Corruption in BTC

The BTC education scam has sent shockwaves across the academic and student communities in the Bodoland Territorial Region. According to BoNSU, the scam revolves around blacklisted publishers allegedly supplying low-quality and overpriced books to several government-affiliated colleges under Bodoland University.

The student body claims that these publishers were previously disqualified for failing to meet quality standards, yet were somehow awarded contracts worth lakhs. This, BoNSU alleges, not only violates procurement rules but also compromises the quality of education in BTC-administered institutions.

BoNSU has submitted a detailed memorandum to the Chief Minister’s Office, urging him to initiate a high-level probe. The group emphasized that students’ futures are at stake and such scams in education must not go unpunished.

Colleges Affected in Bodoland University’s Network

Several colleges affiliated with Bodoland University, such as Kokrajhar Government College, Bodofa U.N. Brahma College, and Science College, Kokrajhar, have reportedly received the overpriced books.

BoNSU representatives claimed that officials in the Education Department awarded tenders to these blacklisted publishers without following due process or verifying vendor credibility. The total financial impact of the scam is yet to be assessed, but initial estimates suggest that the Education Department spent crores on substandard academic material.

BoNSU also demanded the suspension of the involved officials pending the outcome of the investigation.

Students Demand Transparency and Accountability BTC

As the controversy intensifies, students across Bodoland are voicing their concern. Many have joined BoNSU’s campaign on social media under hashtags like #JusticeForBodolandStudents and #BTCBookScam.

This rising discontent has prompted local civil society groups and academic voices to call for immediate government attention. BoNSU has warned that if the government does not respond within the next few days, it will organize a mass protest in Kokrajhar and surrounding districts.

According to the students’ union, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier promised zero tolerance toward corruption in education. They now hope he will act decisively to protect the future of thousands of students in the region.

Government Response Awaited

As of now, the Assam government has not issued a formal response. However, sources in the Education Department confirmed that a preliminary inquiry may be initiated if substantial evidence is presented.

Meanwhile, officials from the Bodoland Territorial Council have denied any wrongdoing, stating that all procurement procedures were followed as per guidelines. They have welcomed an independent probe to clear the air.

The issue has echoes of past procurement-related scams, such as those reported in other northeastern states. To read more about past education reforms in Assam, visit the Education in Assam portal.

A Call for Reform and Vigilance

This incident once again highlights the importance of transparency in educational administration. With exams approaching, students are depending on timely access to quality resources.

As the BTC education scam unfolds, public pressure is mounting for justice, reforms, and a renewed commitment to integrity in Assam’s education system. The government’s next steps will determine whether the trust of thousands of students and parents can be restored.
