Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is set to host a lunch for INDIA bloc MPs in Delhi on October 7, a day after a major Opposition protest over alleged electoral irregularities. The gathering comes after Rahul Gandhi and several other opposition leaders were detained during the protest near the Election Commission headquarters.
The lunch is expected to provide an opportunity for leaders of the opposition alliance to discuss their next steps following the confrontation with police and the Election Commission.
Lunch Planned After Major Opposition Protest
Kharge will host INDIA bloc MPs at a restaurant in central Delhi. The meeting comes after Tuesday’s lengthy demonstration, which involved several opposition parties.
The protest focused on allegations of “vote chori” and demands for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition MPs had attempted to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters.
The lunch is likely to serve as an informal meeting point for opposition leaders following the day’s events.
Rahul Gandhi Detained During Protest
Rahul Gandhi led the march along with several other INDIA bloc leaders. Police stopped the protesters near the Election Commission office after putting up barricades along the route.
Gandhi climbed a barricade during the protest and later joined a sit-in at the Akashvani Bhavan complex. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition leaders also remained at the site.
After an extended standoff, police detained the protesting leaders. Gandhi and other leaders were later released.
Opposition Raises ‘Vote Chori’ Allegations
The protest centred on Opposition allegations concerning electoral rolls and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision process.
INDIA bloc leaders have demanded greater transparency in electoral-roll revisions. They have also questioned the Election Commission over alleged irregularities and called for accountability.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has disputed aspects of the Opposition’s account. It said no political party had formally requested a meeting with its officials before the protest on Tuesday.
INDIA Bloc Leaders Prepare Next Steps
The lunch comes as opposition parties continue to coordinate their response to the electoral-roll controversy.
The INDIA bloc has already announced a series of programmes around the issue. Opposition leaders have discussed joint action and further protests as part of their campaign for greater transparency in the electoral process.
Kharge has previously called for opposition parties to work together on the issue. The alliance has also outlined several demands related to electoral-roll revisions and voter protection.
Protest Leads to Political Confrontation
Tuesday’s demonstration developed into a prolonged standoff between opposition leaders and the police. Hundreds of opposition MPs and supporters participated in the protest.
Police detained several leaders after protesters remained at the Akashvani Bhavan premises for hours. The action followed repeated attempts by the Opposition to reach the Election Commission office.
The incident has added to the political tension surrounding the electoral-roll revision issue.
Kharge’s Lunch Comes at a Key Moment
The INDIA bloc lunch takes place as opposition parties consider their response after the latest protest. Leaders are expected to discuss the developments surrounding the detention of Rahul Gandhi and other MPs.
The gathering could also provide an opportunity to coordinate future programmes on the electoral-roll issue.
For the Opposition, the focus remains on raising questions about the electoral process and seeking greater transparency. The Election Commission has maintained its position on the procedures followed during electoral-roll revisions.
Opposition Campaign Continues
The lunch signals that the INDIA bloc’s campaign on electoral issues will continue after Tuesday’s confrontation. With leaders from several opposition parties participating, coordination will remain central to their next moves.
Kharge’s meeting with alliance MPs comes one day after Rahul Gandhi’s detention and the prolonged protest in Delhi. The discussions are expected to shape the Opposition’s response to the continuing dispute over electoral rolls and its allegations of “vote chori.”
