The Meghalaya government has issued a firm statement on the ongoing Meghalaya truckers strike, calling the blockade and road obstruction by transporters “illegal and unjustified.” The state administration emphasized that while drivers and transport unions have the right to voice their concerns, blocking public roads and disrupting essential supplies is against the law.
The strike, which began earlier this week, was organized by a section of truck operators protesting alleged harassment by enforcement officials and the high cost of fuel and toll taxes. As the protest escalated, long queues of stranded vehicles were reported on major routes, affecting the movement of goods and daily commuters.

Blockade Declared Illegal
Home Department officials clarified that the blockade linked to the Meghalaya truckers strike has no legal backing and violates multiple provisions under the Indian Penal Code. Authorities have invoked sections related to unlawful assembly and obstruction of public roads.
State police have been instructed to take preventive action to maintain order and prevent further disruption. Senior officers have been deployed along major highways, including the Shillong-Guwahati and Jowai-Silchar routes, to ensure the free movement of vehicles.
