Meghalaya’s globally acclaimed Lakadong turmeric has received a major boost with the launch of “Mission Golden Spice,” a ₹175-crore integrated development initiative aimed at transforming the state’s premium turmeric variety into a leading global export. The five-year mission seeks to expand cultivation, strengthen processing infrastructure, improve branding, and enhance market access while significantly increasing farmers’ incomes.
Launched by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia in collaboration with the Meghalaya government, the initiative is expected to position Lakadong turmeric as Meghalaya’s flagship agricultural export. Officials believe the programme will not only strengthen the spice’s international presence but also generate employment and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for thousands of farming families.
Mission Golden Spice Launched
The ₹175-crore Mission Golden Spice has been designed as a comprehensive development programme covering every stage of the Lakadong turmeric value chain—from cultivation and processing to branding and exports.
The initiative aims to improve production capacity while ensuring better quality standards, certification, storage, packaging, and marketing. It also seeks to establish Meghalaya as a global hub for premium turmeric with high curcumin content.
Officials said the mission represents one of the largest investments made towards promoting a single agricultural product from the Northeast.
Expanding Cultivation Across Meghalaya
One of the primary objectives of the mission is to significantly increase the area under Lakadong turmeric cultivation.
Currently grown on nearly 2,600 hectares, the government plans to expand cultivation to around 7,000 hectares over the next five years. This expansion is expected to increase annual production substantially while creating new opportunities for farmers across the Jaintia Hills region.
The programme also focuses on improving productivity through better planting material, scientific cultivation techniques, and farmer support services.
Supporting Over 17,500 Farmers
The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 17,500 farmers, the majority of whom are women engaged in turmeric cultivation.
Officials estimate that nearly 99 percent of those directly associated with processing and institutional activities under the mission will be women, making the programme an important step towards strengthening women’s participation in the rural economy.
By improving market access and increasing the value of the crop, the government aims to substantially raise farm incomes while creating thousands of additional employment opportunities.
Strengthening Processing and Value Addition
A major component of Mission Golden Spice involves developing modern infrastructure for processing Lakadong turmeric.
The project includes establishing advanced processing facilities, storage infrastructure, pack houses, warehouses, and a curcumin extraction unit to support value-added production. These facilities are expected to improve product quality while enabling farmers to receive better prices in domestic and international markets.
Improved processing infrastructure will also reduce post-harvest losses and enhance export competitiveness.
Branding Lakadong as a Global Product
The mission places strong emphasis on branding Lakadong turmeric as a premium international product.
Marketing strategies will focus on highlighting the spice’s exceptional quality, organic cultivation methods, and naturally high curcumin content, which distinguishes it from ordinary turmeric varieties.
Authorities also plan to strengthen traceability systems, quality certification, and international marketing campaigns to increase global demand for the product.
Officials believe stronger branding will help Meghalaya establish Lakadong turmeric as one of India’s leading agricultural exports.
Why Lakadong Turmeric Is Unique
Lakadong turmeric, cultivated mainly in the West and East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, is recognised for its exceptionally high curcumin content, generally ranging between 7 and 12 percent, significantly higher than conventional turmeric varieties.
Curcumin is valued for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making Lakadong turmeric highly sought after in the food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and wellness industries.
The turmeric also received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, further strengthening its authenticity and market value.
Boosting Rural Economy and Employment
Beyond increasing agricultural production, Mission Golden Spice is expected to create nearly 3,000 additional jobs through processing, logistics, packaging, marketing, and export-related activities.
The project is likely to stimulate rural entrepreneurship while encouraging greater participation by farmer producer organisations (FPOs), cooperatives, and local enterprises.
Officials believe the initiative will contribute significantly to Meghalaya’s rural economy by generating sustainable employment and increasing value addition within the state.
Promoting the Northeast’s Agricultural Potential
The launch of Mission Golden Spice reflects the Centre’s broader strategy of promoting unique agricultural products from the Northeastern region.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the Northeast has become an important driver of India’s development, and initiatives such as this can unlock the region’s enormous agricultural and export potential.
The programme is also expected to encourage investment in agri-processing, food exports, and rural infrastructure across Meghalaya.
A Golden Opportunity for Meghalaya
The ₹175-crore Mission Golden Spice marks a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s agricultural development journey. By combining expanded cultivation, modern infrastructure, scientific farming, branding, and export promotion, the initiative seeks to transform Lakadong turmeric into a globally recognised premium product.
As cultivation expands and processing capabilities improve, the mission is expected to enhance farmer incomes, generate employment, and strengthen Meghalaya’s position in the global spice market. With its unique quality, GI recognition, and growing international demand, Lakadong turmeric is poised to become one of India’s most successful agricultural export stories.
