Chakma Leaders Highlight Administrative Breakdown

On Tuesday, key Chakma civil bodies submitted a memorandum to Mizoram Governor Om Prakash Mathur. In the letter, they outlined what they described as a “complete breakdown of governance” within the CADC.

They alleged that the administration has failed to function for over a month. Regular council activities remain suspended. According to the Chakma groups, public welfare schemes have stalled, and essential services are disrupted.

As the Mizoram political crisis grows deeper, tensions are rising in the affected areas. Local residents are reportedly struggling due to the absence of functional governance.

Demand for Dismissal of Executive Committee

The organizations, including the Central Young Chakma Association and Chakma Mahila Samiti, have demanded that the Governor dismiss the current Executive Committee of the CADC. They claimed that the committee no longer enjoys the majority’s support.

According to the groups, multiple attempts to convene council meetings have failed. They argue that inaction by the leadership has further deepened the Mizoram political crisis.

The memorandum urged the Governor to appoint an interim body or call for a new election, ensuring a stable and functional council.

Political Context Behind the CADC Deadlock

The CADC is one of three autonomous district councils in Mizoram, created to safeguard the rights and culture of the Chakma community. However, internal disputes have frequently led to leadership changes and administrative paralysis.

The current crisis stems from recent infighting within the ruling party in the council. Several elected members reportedly withdrew support from the incumbent Chief Executive Member (CEM), making governance difficult.

As a result, the Mizoram political crisis now includes not just administrative failure but also political uncertainty and rising public dissatisfaction.

Governor Yet to Respond Publicly

So far, Governor Om Prakash Mathur has not issued any formal response. However, Raj Bhavan officials confirmed that the memorandum was received and is under review.

A source close to the Governor’s office stated that steps may be taken soon if the situation does not improve. Meanwhile, the Chakma groups have warned that protests could erupt if their demands are ignored.

Civil Society Pushes for Immediate Action

Public sentiment in Chakma-dominated areas is growing tense. Many residents have taken to social media, calling for transparency and swift intervention.

Civil society groups continue to appeal for calm. Still, they insist that only the Governor’s intervention can resolve the Mizoram political crisis.

They emphasized that restoring democratic processes in the CADC is vital for peace and development in the region.
