Remembering the Iron Man of India

October 31 marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, widely known as the “Iron Man of India.” As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel played a crucial role in integrating more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence. His vision of a united and strong India continues to inspire generations.

PM Modi, in his appeal, said that the Run for Unity is more than just a fitness event—it is a tribute to Patel’s unwavering dedication to national unity and good governance. He described Patel’s leadership as a cornerstone of India’s democratic and administrative foundations.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Sardar Patel’s contributions remain deeply relevant today as India continues to grow as a cohesive, inclusive nation. “His efforts laid the groundwork for a united India. It is our responsibility to carry forward his vision,” Modi stated.

Nationwide preparations for the event

The Run for Unity will take place across all states and Union Territories, with participants running for the cause of national integrity. The main event will be held at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat, where thousands are expected to join under the leadership of senior government officials.

Union ministries, educational institutions, and public organizations have been directed to organize local runs in cities and towns. State governments are also coordinating with district authorities to ensure widespread participation.

In New Delhi, the run will start from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and conclude near India Gate. Similar events are being planned in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Guwahati. Officials said the focus this year will be on involving school and college students to spread awareness about Sardar Patel’s contributions.

Encouraging youth participation

PM Modi has consistently emphasized the role of the youth in nation-building. In his latest message, he urged students and young professionals to lead the way in promoting unity and fitness through participation in the Run for Unity.

He said that such initiatives not only remind citizens of India’s history but also foster a sense of collective pride and responsibility. “Every step you take during this run is a tribute to the spirit of oneness that Sardar Patel envisioned,” the Prime Minister remarked.

Several youth organizations, including the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), have been mobilized to organize awareness campaigns, poster drives, and social media challenges to encourage mass involvement.

Tribute at the Statue of Unity

The main event in Kevadia will feature a grand tribute at the Statue of Unity—the world’s tallest statue, standing at 182 meters. Built in honor of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the statue has become a national symbol of strength and unity since its inauguration by PM Modi in 2018.

During the Run for Unity, participants at the site will take a pledge to uphold India’s unity, integrity, and security. Cultural programs highlighting Patel’s life, leadership, and values will also be organized.

Government officials have announced that a special exhibition on Sardar Patel’s role in India’s freedom struggle and post-independence integration will be open to visitors throughout the week.

National Unity Day celebration

Since 2014, October 31 has been observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day. The day is dedicated to reaffirming the importance of unity, security, and integrity among India’s citizens. Every year, lakhs of people participate in the Run for Unity to mark this occasion.

In his address, PM Modi said that the observance of National Unity Day serves as a reminder of how Sardar Patel’s foresight prevented India from fracturing into separate territories after independence. “His leadership ensured that the dream of one India became a reality,” he said.

Various ministries and schools have planned debates, essay competitions, and cultural performances focusing on Patel’s contributions and the significance of unity in a diverse nation like India.

Global resonance of Patel’s ideals

Beyond India’s borders, Indian embassies and diaspora communities are also organizing Run for Unity events in cities such as London, New York, and Dubai. These gatherings aim to strengthen India’s image as a country that celebrates unity in diversity.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs said that such international events help spread awareness about India’s history and inspire pride among overseas Indians. The global response, they noted, reflects the universal admiration for Patel’s leadership and legacy.

PM Modi’s vision of a united India

The Prime Minister linked the spirit of the Run for Unity to his larger vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” an initiative aimed at strengthening cultural ties and fostering cooperation among Indian states. He said unity and development must go hand in hand to ensure lasting progress.

“India’s diversity is our strength. When we stand together, no challenge can divide us,” PM Modi stated, encouraging citizens to renew their commitment to national harmony.

He also reminded people that Sardar Patel’s values of discipline, courage, and integrity should guide India’s path forward. The Prime Minister concluded his message by saying that Patel’s life continues to serve as a guiding light for India’s journey toward becoming a global leader.

A call for participation

As preparations intensify across the country, citizens have responded enthusiastically to the Prime Minister’s call. Many organizations and individuals have pledged to join the Run for Unity to celebrate not only the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel but also the enduring spirit of India’s togetherness.

The event, combining fitness with patriotism, stands as a national reminder that unity remains India’s greatest strength. On October 31, thousands will run with purpose, carrying forward the message that Sardar Patel championed—an India that moves forward as one.
