Addressing the media after paying tribute to the late police chief, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the preliminary findings of the post-mortem indicate that DGP Anurag Dhankar died due to hanging. At the same time, he clarified that the investigation is far from over and that authorities will continue to examine every aspect of the case as mandated by law.

The Chief Minister urged people not to speculate until the investigation reaches its conclusion. He emphasized that the state government is committed to ensuring a fair, impartial, and legally sound probe into the incident.

How the Incident Unfolded

The senior IPS officer was found inside the bathroom attached to his chamber at the Tripura Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Officials rushed him to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where doctors attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Despite sustained efforts by the medical team, he was declared dead.

Doctors subsequently conducted the post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. While the preliminary findings indicate hanging, officials have maintained that the complete forensic and investigative process will continue before any final conclusions are drawn.

Police Following Legal Procedures

The Chief Minister reiterated that the state police and investigating agencies are following all legal procedures. He said every piece of evidence will be examined carefully, and no conclusions will be reached until the investigation is complete.

Anurag Dhankar’s Distinguished Career

Anurag Dhankar belonged to the 1994 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) and had served Tripura in several important positions during his career. Before assuming charge as the Director General of Police, he served as DGP (Intelligence) and held additional responsibilities related to law and order.

Over the years, Dhankar also served with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he was associated with several high-profile investigations. His long administrative and policing career earned him the Police Medal for Meritorious Service as well as the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

He took over as Tripura’s Director General of Police in May last year and was due to retire in about 11 months.

State Mourns the Loss

The untimely death of the senior IPS officer has deeply affected the police fraternity and the state administration. Tributes poured in from political leaders, senior bureaucrats, police officials, and members of the public.

The Tripura Cabinet expressed its condolences and honoured Dhankar’s contribution to public service. Chief Minister Manik Saha described the incident as a profound loss for the state and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

The officer is survived by his wife and son. Following the post-mortem, his mortal remains were handed over to the family for the final rites.
