A group of Sikkim tribal students has brought pride to the state by successfully completing a prestigious mountaineering course. Their performance earned them national recognition and highlighted the potential of tribal youth in adventure sports.
The students, hailing from remote and underdeveloped areas of the state, underwent training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling. Known for its high standards, HMI is one of Asia’s most reputed mountaineering training centers.

Mountaineering course tests physical and mental strength
The intensive course, spanning over a month, tested the students on multiple levels. It included rock climbing, glacier trekking, ice-craft, and survival skills in high-altitude terrain. Despite facing harsh conditions and physical challenges, the tribal youth excelled with flying colors.
According to the institute’s instructors, the Sikkim tribal students displayed extraordinary perseverance, team spirit, and adaptability throughout the training. They managed to outperform many peers from across the country.
Training initiative supported by the state
The initiative was supported by the Tribal Welfare Department of Sikkim under a state-sponsored youth empowerment program. The goal was to identify and support young talent from tribal communities and offer them national-level exposure.

Trainers at HMI were deeply impressed by the students’ natural strength and ability to adapt to high altitudes. Some of the participants had never stepped outside their villages before but quickly adjusted to the intense training.
“Despite language barriers and climatic changes, these students performed exceptionally well,” said a lead instructor. “Their mental toughness stood out during difficult glacier hikes and ropework exercises.”
The Sikkim tribal students reportedly received some of the highest grades in the course, beating even those from metropolitan backgrounds.
Students share their inspiring journey
Many of the participants had never experienced such an environment before. Their journey from rural Sikkim to national limelight is inspiring. Speaking to the media, the students expressed gratitude for the opportunity and hope to pursue mountaineering as a career.
“I used to climb hills back home while grazing cattle. I never imagined it could lead to a real profession,” said one of the top performers from Dzongu.
Another student said that the course not only built physical strength but also boosted confidence and leadership skills. “Now I feel I can achieve anything with discipline,” she added.
Future plans and long-term goals
The government now plans to offer advanced training for the students who performed well. They may be nominated for international expeditions, rescue operations, or even for future roles as instructors.
Additionally, the state is considering the development of a dedicated adventure training center within Sikkim to reduce travel costs and increase accessibility.
With the success of the Sikkim tribal students, the government is also planning to tie up with more national-level institutes to offer scholarships in adventure and sports fields.
National praise and recognition
The students’ success was acknowledged at the national level by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Both praised the resilience and talent of Sikkim’s tribal youth.

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda tweeted, “Proud of the Sikkim tribal students who’ve shown the world what strength, skill, and willpower look like.”
