Just days after the BJP’s historic victory in West Bengal ended the Trinamool Congress regime, the new government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday launched its first major administrative action in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case by suspending three senior IPS officers over the alleged mishandling of the investigation.
The suspended officers include former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal along with IPS officers Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta. The state government also announced departmental proceedings against all three officers.

The decision marks the first major administrative crackdown by the newly formed BJP government in one of the most politically sensitive and controversial cases in recent Bengal history.
Addressing a press conference at Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari accused the officers of serious lapses during the investigation into the brutal rape and murder case that had triggered nationwide outrage and massive protests across West Bengal.
Government Announces Suspension Of Senior IPS Officers
The West Bengal government confirmed that the three IPS officers have been suspended with immediate effect pending departmental inquiry.
Officials said the government would conduct a detailed internal investigation into the role and conduct of the officers during the handling of the RG Kar case.
According to Chief Minister Adhikari, the administration found evidence of procedural irregularities and questionable actions during the investigation process.
The chief minister alleged that the officers attempted to influence the victim’s family and failed to follow proper administrative protocols while interacting with the media.
“The officers were involved in offering bribes to the family and held press conferences without written orders,” Adhikari said during the press conference.
The government stated that departmental proceedings would examine all allegations and determine accountability in the matter.
RG Kar Case Triggered Massive Public Outrage
The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case had become one of the most politically explosive incidents in West Bengal.
The brutal crime triggered widespread protests, candle marches, and demonstrations across the state, with citizens, doctors, students, and civil society groups demanding justice and accountability.
Opposition parties had repeatedly accused the previous Trinamool Congress administration of mishandling the investigation and attempting to shield influential individuals connected to the case.
The incident also intensified debates regarding women’s safety, policing standards, and institutional accountability in Bengal.
Political observers noted that the case became a central issue during the election campaign, with the BJP repeatedly promising strict action and administrative reforms if voted to power.
The new government’s action against senior police officers is now being viewed as a direct response to those promises.
Suvendu Adhikari Accuses Officers Of Serious Lapses
During the press briefing at Nabanna, Adhikari alleged that the suspended officers committed serious lapses during the course of the investigation.
He accused them of conducting media briefings without proper authorisation and claimed they attempted to influence the victim’s family through inappropriate means.
The chief minister said the new administration would not tolerate any attempt to compromise investigations involving crimes against women.
According to Adhikari, accountability within law enforcement agencies remains essential for restoring public trust in the state administration.
He also stated that the government intends to ensure transparency and professionalism in all future investigations.
Officials close to the administration indicated that additional reviews of past high-profile cases could also take place in the coming months.
BJP Government Signals Tough Administrative Approach
Political analysts described the suspension of the senior IPS officers as a strong signal from the BJP government regarding its administrative priorities.
The BJP had campaigned aggressively on issues such as law and order, women’s safety, corruption, and alleged institutional failures under the previous government.
Observers believe the action demonstrates the new administration’s intention to establish a tougher approach toward accountability in governance and policing.
The suspension also carries political significance because Vineet Goyal served as Kolkata Police Commissioner during a period marked by several politically sensitive controversies.
The decision may further intensify political confrontation between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in the coming days.
Departmental Proceedings To Begin Soon
Officials confirmed that departmental proceedings against the suspended officers will begin shortly.
The inquiry is expected to examine decisions taken during the investigation, communication with the victim’s family, media interactions, and adherence to official protocols.
Sources said the administration may also review internal records and documentation connected to the handling of the case.
The government stated that disciplinary procedures would follow established administrative rules and legal guidelines.
Officials added that the inquiry aims to determine whether procedural misconduct or abuse of authority occurred during the investigation process.
The administration has not ruled out additional action depending on the findings of the inquiry.
Opposition And Political Reactions Expected
The suspension of senior IPS officers in such a high-profile case is likely to trigger sharp political reactions across West Bengal.
BJP leaders defended the move and argued that accountability is necessary in cases involving serious crimes and public trust.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leaders are expected to challenge the allegations and question the political intent behind the suspensions.
Political observers believe the issue could become another major flashpoint between the ruling BJP government and the opposition TMC.
The RG Kar case had already become deeply politicised during the election campaign, with both sides accusing each other of exploiting the tragedy for political gain.
The latest development is likely to keep the issue at the centre of Bengal politics for the foreseeable future.
Public Attention Remains On RG Kar Case
The RG Kar case continues to attract significant public attention because of its emotional and political impact across Bengal.
Civil society groups and protest organisations have repeatedly demanded transparency, accountability, and justice in the matter.
The suspension of the IPS officers has generated fresh debate regarding police accountability and administrative responsibility in sensitive criminal investigations.
Many citizens and activists welcomed the announcement of an inquiry while urging the government to ensure a fair and impartial process.
Observers noted that the public expects strong action in cases involving crimes against women and allegations of institutional misconduct.
Government Promises Transparency And Accountability
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state government remains committed to ensuring justice and accountability in the RG Kar case.
He stated that no individual, regardless of position or rank, would receive protection if found guilty of misconduct or negligence.
According to the chief minister, restoring public confidence in law enforcement institutions remains one of the administration’s major priorities.
The government also indicated that broader reforms related to policing, administrative conduct, and investigation procedures could follow in the future.
Officials stated that the inquiry into the suspended officers would proceed transparently and according to legal procedures.
As departmental proceedings begin, political parties, civil society groups, and the public are expected to closely monitor every development related to the RG Kar case and the government’s actions moving forward.
