The Arunachal Pradesh authorities have launched a third search operation to locate Jamok Pansa, a young man who went missing in Dibang Valley earlier this month. Despite extensive efforts by local police, disaster response teams, and community volunteers, Pansa’s whereabouts remain unknown, prompting the administration to intensify its rescue operations across the district’s rugged terrain.
The 24-year-old from Etalin village was last seen on October 12, when he reportedly left home to visit a nearby forest area. After he failed to return, his family lodged a missing report, and a search was immediately initiated by the district police. However, the area’s challenging topography and unpredictable weather severely hampered progress during the first two search phases.

Third Search Operation Begins in Dibang Valley
Deputy Commissioner of Dibang Valley, Simu Katan, confirmed that the third phase of the search operation began on Tuesday morning with additional support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local volunteers. “We have mobilized more resources, including trained personnel, drones, and sniffer dogs. The objective is to cover unsearched zones in the forest area and along river stretches,” Katan said.
The operation is being conducted in coordination with the Arunachal Pradesh Police, the Indian Army, and local villagers who have been assisting tirelessly. Officials stated that the latest effort would focus on the upper belt of the valley, where dense forests and steep ridges make access extremely difficult.
Search teams have been divided into smaller units, each covering specific zones. The NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are leading efforts in the deeper forest areas, while the police are managing ground-level coordination and communication.
Rough Terrain and Harsh Weather Pose Challenges
Dibang Valley, one of the most remote districts in India, is known for its mountainous landscape and harsh weather. Officials say that continuous rain and poor visibility have slowed down the search. “The terrain here is among the toughest in the country. Dense vegetation, river crossings, and steep cliffs make even short distances hard to cover,” said a member of the search team.
Helicopters have been kept on standby for aerial reconnaissance if weather conditions improve. However, recent cloud cover has limited their operation. The use of drones is proving essential in scanning areas that are inaccessible by foot.
Despite these difficulties, authorities remain committed to continuing the search until every possibility is explored. “We understand the family’s pain. Our teams are working round the clock to bring closure,” said SP (Dibang Valley) Jumi Padu.
Family and Locals Plead for Continuation of Search
Jamok Pansa’s family and villagers have expressed deep concern over the prolonged uncertainty. His father, who has been accompanying search teams, said they would not give up hope. “We just want our son back, no matter what condition he is in. The administration has been helpful, but we are praying for quicker results,” he shared emotionally.
Local community members have also joined the operation voluntarily, providing manpower and logistical support. Many have been guiding the official teams through difficult terrains, using their familiarity with the forest routes.
The Idu Mishmi community of Dibang Valley has organized prayer meetings across villages for Pansa’s safe return. Traditional groups have also performed rituals seeking divine guidance in locating the missing youth.
Officials Explore All Possible Leads
Authorities are treating the case with utmost seriousness and have not ruled out any possibility, including accidental fall, animal attack, or disorientation due to weather. Police sources said they are also verifying reports that Pansa may have ventured into unfamiliar forest zones during a hunting trip.
A forensic team has been stationed at Etalin to analyze any clues or personal belongings found during the search. Some items, including footprints and a torn piece of fabric resembling his clothing, were recovered near the Anini Riverbank last week. However, officials said no conclusive evidence has yet emerged.
“Every clue is being examined carefully. We are leaving no stone unturned to find out what happened,” a senior investigating officer said.
State Government Extends Support
The Arunachal Pradesh government has assured full support to the local administration in Dibang Valley. Chief Minister Pema Khandu reviewed the situation on Monday and directed officials to intensify the search while ensuring safety of personnel.
In a social media post, he urged residents to cooperate with the authorities and share any information that might help trace Jamok Pansa. “We stand with the family during this difficult time. I have instructed the district administration to use all available resources for the search,” Khandu stated.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has also sought assistance from central agencies to provide advanced technical equipment, such as thermal imaging cameras, to enhance the search’s effectiveness.
Emotional Wave Across the State
The disappearance of Jamok Pansa has sparked widespread concern and empathy across Arunachal Pradesh. Social media platforms are flooded with messages of solidarity and prayers for his safe return. Several youth organizations and student groups have extended moral support to the family.
In Itanagar, students from various colleges organized a candlelight vigil to express solidarity with the missing youth’s family. “We hope the authorities will not rest until Jamok is found,” said a student leader from Rajiv Gandhi University.
