Zoramthanga degree certificate is set to be presented to former Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga by Gauhati University, nearly six decades after he completed his undergraduate studies. The development highlights an unusual academic chapter in the life of the veteran Mizo National Front (MNF) leader, whose political journey took him from college to the underground Mizo movement and eventually to the highest elected office in Mizoram.
Zoramthanga completed his BA in English honours from DM College, Imphal, in 1966. At the time, the college was affiliated with Gauhati University. DM College was affiliated with Gauhati University from 1949 and remained under its affiliation for several decades before later coming under Manipur University.
From DM College to a historic political journey
Born in 1944 in Samthang village in present-day Champhai district, Zoramthanga pursued his higher education in Imphal during the early 1960s. He studied at DM College between 1962 and 1966, completing his BA with English honours.
His college years coincided with a period of growing political mobilisation in the Mizo-inhabited areas. Zoramthanga joined the Mizo National Front movement in 1965 while he was still completing his studies. The MNF later launched an armed uprising in 1966, forcing its leaders and cadres underground.
As a result, his graduation became an unusual part of his personal history. Reports have noted that Zoramthanga learned about completing his English honours degree while he was with his MNF comrades in the underground movement.
A degree completed before decades in politics
The presentation of the Zoramthanga degree certificate comes against the backdrop of a career that extended far beyond academia. After joining the Mizo movement, Zoramthanga became a close aide and secretary to MNF leader Laldenga. He later became vice-president of the organisation.
Following the signing of the Mizo Peace Accord in 1986, the MNF entered electoral politics. Zoramthanga became a minister in the interim government headed by Laldenga and later emerged as one of the party’s most influential leaders.
He succeeded Laldenga as MNF president after the latter’s death in 1990. Zoramthanga subsequently led the party to electoral victories and served as Mizoram chief minister for multiple terms. The MNF returned to power under his leadership in 2018, although the party lost the 2023 Assembly election and Zoramthanga also lost his Aizawl East-I seat.
Gauhati University connection
The academic link between Zoramthanga and Gauhati University dates back to the period when DM College was affiliated with the university. Historical records of the institution state that DM College was first affiliated with Calcutta University in 1946 before moving to Gauhati University in August 1949. It later became affiliated with Manipur University.
This historical affiliation explains why Gauhati University is connected to Zoramthanga’s undergraduate qualification despite his studying at a college in Imphal.
The university’s role also reflects the wider educational structure of the Northeast during that period. Before the establishment and expansion of separate universities in the region, Gauhati University served as an important affiliating institution for colleges in neighbouring areas, including Manipur.
Education remained important in his career
Zoramthanga’s academic background also influenced his political and administrative career. His English honours qualification was unusual among the early MNF leadership, particularly during the years when much of the organisation operated underground.
A recent profile of the former chief minister noted that his education helped him rise within the MNF and that he was the only English honours graduate among the movement’s underground leadership for a considerable period.
His career later included responsibilities as finance and education minister before he became chief minister. He also authored books reflecting on the Mizo movement and his experiences as an underground leader.
A delayed academic milestone
The presentation of the Zoramthanga degree certificate nearly 60 years after his graduation is therefore more than an administrative formality. It reconnects a significant political figure with an important part of his early life and with an institution that played a major role in higher education across the Northeast.
Zoramthanga, now a former chief minister and veteran MNF leader, has remained active in public life after leaving the chief minister’s office. In 2026, he continued to serve as MNF president and remained involved in the party’s political activities.
The delayed certificate also offers a reminder of how academic records can carry historical significance decades after a student’s graduation. For Zoramthanga, the document links his student years in Imphal in the 1960s with a political career that would help shape Mizoram’s post-accord history.
