Bimol Akoijam JNU dismissal has become a major political and legal issue after Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam announced that he would challenge Jawaharlal Nehru University’s decision to terminate his services. On October 16, 2026, the Inner Manipur MP said he would approach the court within a day or two, maintaining that he would continue his work if the allegations against him were not proven. He also urged the media to focus on the humanitarian crisis in Manipur, particularly the suffering of internally displaced people.

Bimol Akoijam to Challenge JNU’s Decision in Court

Akoijam made his position clear while responding to the university’s action over allegations of sexual harassment. He indicated that he would seek legal recourse against his dismissal and contest the findings that led to the termination of his university service.

According to reports published on October 16, Akoijam said he intended to file his legal challenge within the next day or two. His statement signals that the dispute could move into a new phase, with the university’s decision and the procedures followed during the inquiry potentially becoming central issues in the legal proceedings.

The MP has denied the allegations against him. However, the outcome of any legal challenge will depend on the relevant proceedings and the evidence considered by the authorities. The allegations and his response remain important parts of an ongoing controversy that has drawn attention across political and academic circles.

Why JNU Dismissed Bimol Akoijam

Jawaharlal Nehru University dismissed Akoijam from service with immediate effect on October 9, following an inquiry by its Internal Committee into sexual harassment complaints. He was associated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the university’s School of Social Sciences.

According to media reports, at least 11 female students had complained against him in May 2026. The complaints reportedly included allegations of inappropriate remarks and misconduct involving students at his campus residence.

The university’s dismissal order stated that the committee had recommended major punishment under the applicable service rules. JNU maintained that the decision followed the inquiry and consideration of the available findings.

Akoijam has rejected the allegations and questioned the fairness of the process. His planned court challenge is expected to focus attention on the inquiry and the grounds on which the university decided to terminate his services.

Akoijam Questions Inquiry Procedure

The Congress MP had earlier accused the university administration of making misleading statements about his participation in the inquiry. He disputed claims concerning the submission of witnesses and the number of communications exchanged during the proceedings.

In a public statement, Akoijam said his witnesses had provided depositions on August 14, 2026. He also maintained that he had submitted a written response on May 31 and his deposition on July 16.

Akoijam disputed the university administration’s account of email communications, saying he had received and responded to 43 emails rather than the 300 reportedly cited by the vice-chancellor.

He described the inquiry as unfair and alleged that the proceedings were being used to damage his reputation. These statements represent his version of the events, while the university’s inquiry findings and the allegations remain matters of public and legal scrutiny.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association also raised concerns about alleged procedural violations and confidentiality in the handling of the case.

Delhi Police Investigation Adds to the Controversy

The dispute has extended beyond the university, with Delhi Police registering a First Information Report against Akoijam on October 11, following a complaint by JNU’s chief security officer.

The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North Police Station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These provisions include offences relating to sexual harassment and acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty.

Akoijam appeared before Delhi Police investigators on October 15 in connection with the case. After returning to Imphal, he said he would cooperate with the investigation while pursuing legal remedies against the university’s action.

The registration of an FIR does not establish guilt, and the allegations remain subject to the legal process. Akoijam has denied the accusations and alleged that the complaints were politically motivated.

MP Urges Media to Focus on Manipur’s Humanitarian Crisis

Alongside his announcement of a legal challenge, Akoijam called on the media to devote greater attention to the continuing crisis in Manipur.

He highlighted the condition of thousands of internally displaced people living in relief camps, concerns over lawlessness and buffer zones, and the disruption of students’ education.

The MP argued that the suffering of displaced families deserved sustained public attention. He said his personal difficulties should not overshadow the hardships faced by people affected by the state’s continuing instability.

Akoijam also appealed to people in Manipur to maintain peace and calm, stressing the need for caution amid tensions surrounding the controversy.

His remarks have placed two issues at the centre of the latest developments: his challenge to JNU’s decision and his demand for greater attention to the humanitarian situation in Manipur.

What Happens Next in the Bimol Akoijam JNU Dismissal Case?

The immediate next step is expected to be the legal challenge being prepared by Akoijam’s lawyers. The case could bring further scrutiny of the university’s inquiry, the procedures followed before dismissal and the grounds cited in the termination order.

At the same time, the police investigation remains ongoing. The university proceedings and criminal investigation are separate processes, and their outcomes will depend on the relevant evidence and legal procedures.

The Bimol Akoijam JNU dismissal controversy is therefore likely to remain in the spotlight as the legal process develops. Akoijam has made clear that he intends to contest the university’s action, while the allegations against him continue to be investigated. The next developments will determine how his legal challenge proceeds and whether the dispute leads to further action by the university or the authorities.
