Meghachandra Singh has said he will continue his fight for justice and restoration of normalcy in Manipur after an explosion near his residence in Yairipok, Thoubal district. The blast occurred near the gate of his home at Bishnunaha on Thursday evening, September 3, prompting police to launch a search operation. No injuries were reported.
Blast near Congress MLA’s residence
The explosion took place at around 8:15 pm near the wall of the residence of Meghachandra Singh in Yairipok Bishnunaha, under the Yairipok police station. Police suspect that an explosive, possibly a grenade, was thrown by an unidentified person.
According to police and Congress sources, the identity of the person responsible and the motive behind the incident remain unknown. Police personnel reached the area soon after the blast and conducted a search operation.
Meghachandra was not at home when the explosion occurred, according to police reports. There were no reports of casualties in the incident.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security of political leaders and public figures in Manipur. The state has been dealing with prolonged ethnic conflict and continuing political tensions since violence erupted in May 2023.
Meghachandra Singh says fight for justice will continue
Speaking after the blast, Meghachandra Singh said the incident would not stop him from raising issues concerning the state.
He said police arrived immediately after the explosion and reiterated his commitment to demanding justice and normalcy in Manipur. He also linked his continued political campaign to issues he has been raising in the state Assembly.
Among them is the demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, with 1951 retained as the base year. Meghachandra said Congress legislators had strongly raised the issue during the recent Assembly proceedings.
The Congress leader also criticised the government for what he described as the absence of a clear roadmap for addressing the situation in the state.
Congress calls blast an attack on democracy
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee strongly condemned the explosion and described it as an attack on democratic institutions.
Senior Congress spokesperson Hareshwar Goswami said political differences should be settled through dialogue and peaceful negotiations. He said the incident was not merely an attack on Meghachandra Singh, but also an attack on the Congress as a political organisation.
Goswami said the party had not received information about the motive behind the blast. He urged authorities to identify those responsible and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Congress has also raised broader concerns about political security in the state, arguing that an attack near the residence of an elected representative should be treated seriously.
NRC demand remains a key political issue
The blast came shortly after Meghachandra Singh and other Opposition legislators raised several contentious issues during the Manipur Assembly session.
On September 2, the Assembly reaffirmed earlier resolutions seeking an update of the NRC before the census. Opposition members, including Meghachandra, pressed for the 1951 base year to be specifically included. The discussion led to heated exchanges between ruling and Opposition members.

He argued that there should be no political protection for violence or selective justice and called for public confidence in the neutrality of the administration.
Meghachandra Singh’s role in Manipur Congress
The Wangkhem MLA has remained a prominent Opposition voice in the state. In February 2026, the All India Congress Committee appointed Okram Ibobi Singh as president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and named Meghachandra Singh as the Congress Legislature Party leader. K Ranjit Singh was appointed deputy CLP leader.
In recent months, he has continued to raise issues involving displaced people, security, governance and restoration of peace. His latest remarks after the blast indicate that the Congress intends to keep pressing the government on these issues despite the security incident.
The Manipur government, meanwhile, has said strengthening law and order and restoring normalcy remain priorities. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh recently told the Assembly that steps would be taken to strengthen the police force and address concerns raised by legislators.
The investigation into the explosion is continuing, with the identity of the person responsible and the motive yet to be established. For now, Meghachandra Singh has made clear that the blast will not alter his political position, as he continues to call for justice, accountability and a return to normalcy in Manipur.
