Sikkim rail connectivity has received a fresh push with Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba urging the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to expedite the ongoing Sevoke-Rangpo railway project. The MP raised the issue at a meeting of the Zonal Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) in Guwahati on August 25, stressing the importance of completing the line at the earliest for tourism, trade, economic development and strategic connectivity.
MP seeks faster progress on Sevoke-Rangpo line
During the ZRUCC meeting, Subba called for faster execution of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line, which will provide Sikkim with its first direct connection to the national railway network. His office said the MP highlighted the project’s importance to the state’s connectivity and broader economic interests.
The 44.96-km railway line connects Sevoke in West Bengal with Rangpo in Sikkim. The project is being built through challenging Himalayan terrain and includes extensive tunnelling and bridge construction. Once operational, it is expected to improve passenger and freight movement between Sikkim, West Bengal and other parts of the country.
The project has been targeted for completion by December 2027. A February 2026 update from the Press Information Bureau said around 90% of the work was complete at that stage, while five stations were in different phases of completion.
Sikkim rail connectivity faces difficult terrain
The Sevoke-Rangpo project is among the most challenging railway infrastructure works in the region because of the steep mountains, deep valleys and landslide-prone terrain. The project includes 14 tunnels and 23 bridges.
According to the Sikkim government, a review by the Standing Committee on Railways in June examined the construction of tunnels, bridges and railway yards. The committee also discussed project cost escalation, safety measures and steps being taken to reduce environmental risks and improve structural stability in ecologically sensitive areas.
The difficult terrain makes timely construction particularly important. At the same time, safety and environmental considerations remain key parts of the project’s execution.
Rail line expected to boost tourism and trade
The completion of the railway line is expected to strengthen Sikkim rail connectivity and provide an alternative transport option for residents, tourists and businesses. Sikkim currently does not have an operational railway network, making the Sevoke-Rangpo project especially significant for the state.
The railway is designed to handle both passenger and freight trains. A February 2025 review meeting noted that the Sevoke station yard had already been completed and that a modern station was planned at Rangpo. The same review placed physical progress above 70% at the time and set December 2027 as the completion target.
The potential economic impact extends beyond passenger travel. Better freight movement could support businesses, improve access to markets and strengthen supply chains. Tourism is another major beneficiary, as easier rail access could make travel to Sikkim more convenient for visitors arriving through the Siliguri corridor.
MP also seeks progress on future rail projects
Subba’s latest intervention also comes amid efforts to expand railway infrastructure beyond Rangpo. During the August 25 meeting, he called for the Final Location Survey (FLS) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Melli-Dentam railway line to be expedited.
The proposed Melli-Dentam line would improve connectivity to southern and western parts of Sikkim. Subba has previously pursued the project with the Railway Ministry, arguing that it could support economic activity, tourism and public mobility in areas that remain relatively distant from major transport corridors.
In June, the MP also met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and discussed railway projects in Sikkim. He sought faster action on the proposed Rangpo-Ranipool railway project, which could take rail connectivity closer to the state capital region.
Operational planning already underway
Preparations for the eventual operation of the Sevoke-Rangpo line have also begun. In March 2026, the Sikkim government held a review meeting on operational readiness, focusing on passenger services, freight logistics and rail-road integration.
Officials discussed creating an integrated system for transferring passengers between the upcoming railway and Bagdogra Airport. Coordination between Sikkim Nationalised Transport and Indian Railways was also highlighted to ensure smoother movement of passengers and goods once railway services begin.
With construction progressing and operational planning underway, the latest demand from the Sikkim MP adds pressure for the project to remain on schedule. Faster completion of the Sevoke-Rangpo line would mark a major milestone for Sikkim rail connectivity and could reshape the state’s links with the wider Indian transport network.
