The Tripura civic polls have taken a significant turn after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced 45 candidates for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, leaving out sitting Mayor Dipak Majumder. The decision marks a major change in the party’s municipal strategy as it prepares to defend its position in the state’s urban local bodies.

The candidate list was announced on November 3 by Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy at a press conference in Agartala. The party has finalised candidates for 45 of the corporation’s 51 wards, while the remaining six names are expected to be announced separately.

The exclusion of Majumder, who is also the MLA from the Ramnagar Assembly constituency, has emerged as one of the most notable developments ahead of the November 27 elections.

BJP Drops Mayor Dipak Majumder Under One Leader, One Post Policy

Explaining the decision, Abhishek Debroy said the party was following its organisational principle of “one leader, one post”. According to him, Majumder already has significant responsibilities as an elected representative of the Ramnagar constituency and should concentrate on his legislative duties.

Debroy maintained that an MLA has responsibilities towards the people of his constituency and that the BJP would contest the municipal elections by highlighting the developmental work carried out under Majumder’s leadership.

The decision does not necessarily indicate a political setback for the outgoing mayor. The party has indicated that his contribution to Agartala’s development over the past five years will remain an important part of its election campaign.

The BJP leadership has not announced a candidate for the mayor’s post. Debroy said the decision regarding the next mayor would be taken after the election results are declared.

Tripura Civic Polls See Major Changes in Candidate Selection

The announcement also reflects a wider reshuffle within the BJP’s municipal organisation. Several sitting corporators have been left out of the first list, with the party citing reservation requirements and internal organisational considerations.

The selection process reportedly involved consultations at different levels of the organisation, including the party’s central leadership. The BJP’s core committee finalised the names after receiving approval from the central leadership.

The party appears to be seeking a balance between experienced representatives and fresh faces. The changes are also expected to introduce new candidates into the corporation’s political structure.

The remaining six candidates are particularly significant because their announcement will complete the BJP’s lineup for all 51 AMC wards.

45 Candidates Announced for Agartala Municipal Corporation

Among the candidates announced by the BJP are Prasenjit Sarkar from Ward 1, Sarmista Bardhan from Ward 2, Jagadish Das from Ward 3, Sujata Das from Ward 4 and Papia Chowdhury from Ward 5.

Other nominees include Mithun Das Baisnab from Ward 6, Jaya Dhanuk from Ward 7, Sampa Sen Sarkar from Ward 8, Pinki Ghosh from Ward 9 and Biswajit Roy from Ward 10.

The list also includes Pradip Chanda from Ward 13, Snigdha Das Deb from Ward 14, Nibash Das from Ward 15, Pinaki Chakraborty from Ward 16 and Sikha Banarjee from Ward 17.

Further nominations include Narayan Dey from Ward 18, Ratna Datta from Ward 20, Pemasish Saha from Ward 21, Mani Mukta Bhattacharjee from Ward 23 and Sukhamay Saha from Ward 24.

The remaining candidates have been selected across several other wards, including Arjun Das, Bidhan Nama, Ruma Das, Alpana Das, Anjana Das, Sanjoy Saha, Abhijit Moullik and Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee.

The party has also nominated candidates for Wards 36 to 40 and Wards 42 to 44, along with Wards 46 to 51. Six wards remain pending in the announced list.

Tipra Motha Gets Three Seats in Seat-Sharing Arrangement

The BJP has also addressed its electoral understanding with alliance partner Tipra Motha Party. Debroy said the BJP had offered three seats to its ally across different municipalities in Tripura.

However, he did not disclose the specific wards where the seats would be allocated. The arrangement is part of the ruling party’s broader preparations for the upcoming urban local body elections.

The BJP is also expected to announce its candidates for other municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats shortly.

November 27 Elections Set to Test BJP’s Urban Support

Elections to 21 civic bodies across Tripura, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, are scheduled for November 27. The polls are expected to be an important political test for the ruling BJP as it seeks to maintain its influence across the state’s urban areas.

The nomination process for the candidates is scheduled for November 4 and 5, adding urgency to the parties’ preparations.

With the Tripura civic polls approaching, the BJP’s decision to leave out its sitting mayor while introducing changes to its candidate lineup has placed its electoral strategy under scrutiny. The announcement of the remaining candidates and the response of party workers to the reshuffle will be important developments in the days ahead. The election results will ultimately determine whether the party’s revised approach can secure another strong mandate in Agartala and other urban local bodies.
