Jorhat overbridge has emerged as an important transport upgrade for Jorhat, helping motorists avoid delays at a busy railway crossing and improving access to key institutions in the district. The two-lane railway overbridge, inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in April 2025, is part of the state government’s wider push to improve road connectivity and reduce traffic bottlenecks caused by railway gates.
Jorhat overbridge targets a major traffic bottleneck
The bridge connects the area near Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, north of Kamarbandha Ali, with the Mission Hospital area to the south. The route is strategically important because it serves daily commuters travelling between Jorhat and neighbouring Golaghat district.
Before the bridge was opened, vehicles frequently had to wait when trains passed through the railway crossing. Long queues at the gate created inconvenience for commuters and could cause delays for people travelling to hospitals, educational institutions and other essential services.
The new elevated road allows vehicles to cross the railway line without waiting for trains, creating a more continuous flow of traffic. The improvement is particularly significant for emergency and healthcare-related journeys.
Project built with Rs 78.27 crore investment
The project was constructed at a total cost of Rs 78.27 crore through equal financial participation from the Assam government and the Railway Department. Work on the main section began in January 2022 and was completed in March 2025 after facing several challenges during construction.
The structure has a total length of 581.20 metres, including a 74-metre section above the railway line. Its two-lane configuration is designed to provide an alternative to the earlier level crossing and improve movement along the busy corridor.
The project had been identified earlier as part of Assam’s infrastructure plans for Jorhat. Government documents list the construction of a railway overbridge in Jorhat town as a completed project under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme, with a sanctioned cost of Rs 87.65 crore for a three-lane ROB replacing Railway LC Gate No. FM58 on the Jorhat-Titabor-Garanga Road.
Better access to hospitals and educational institutions
The overbridge is expected to have benefits beyond ordinary commuter traffic. During its inauguration, Sarma highlighted the difficulties faced by people waiting at the railway gate, particularly those travelling to important healthcare facilities.
The route provides easier access to Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat Cancer Care Centre and Mission Hospital. It also benefits students and staff travelling to institutions such as Assam Agricultural University.
For patients and emergency vehicles, avoiding prolonged railway-gate stoppages can be especially valuable. The bridge also strengthens the connection between Jorhat and Golaghat while improving access to Rowriah Airport and other destinations in and around the city.
Assam expands railway overbridge network
The Jorhat project is part of a broader infrastructure push across Assam aimed at improving road movement around railway corridors. Similar projects have been completed or opened in other parts of the state.
In June 2026, a Rs 72-crore railway overbridge at Madhabpur in Duliajan was inaugurated. The 830-metre structure was designed to remove delays caused by railway movements on the Madhabpur-Tipling Road. The Assam government contributed Rs 47 crore, while Indian Railways provided Rs 25 crore.
A Rs 65-crore railway overbridge was also inaugurated at Sripuria in Tinsukia in June 2026. The 720-metre bridge connects AT Road with Sripuria and was built through joint funding from the state government and Indian Railways.
These projects reflect a wider emphasis on eliminating railway-level crossing delays and creating safer, more predictable road journeys.
Focus on smoother movement across Assam
The development of the Jorhat overbridge also fits into the government’s larger infrastructure strategy for the district. In recent years, Jorhat has seen investment in roads, bridges, flyovers and other transport facilities aimed at supporting its growing urban and regional connectivity.
The state has also continued work on major connectivity projects linking Jorhat with surrounding areas. In February 2026, construction of the long-delayed Majuli-Jorhat bridge and connecting highway was resumed, with the government setting a target of December 2027 for completion.
Together, such projects are intended to strengthen road networks, reduce travel delays and improve access to healthcare, education, tourism and commercial centres.
For Jorhat residents and regular commuters, the overbridge represents a practical improvement in everyday travel. By separating road traffic from railway operations, it reduces dependence on a busy level crossing and provides a more reliable route. As Assam continues investing in railway overbridges and other transport infrastructure, projects such as this are likely to play an important role in creating smoother and safer movement across the state.
