Lunglei Gen-AI Mission has marked a significant step towards modernising school education in Mizoram, with the state government targeting more than 5,500 students across 80 schools in Lunglei district for foundational training in artificial intelligence (AI). Chief Minister Lalduhoma launched the initiative on November 6, aiming to prepare young learners for an increasingly technology-driven world.

Titled “Lunglei Gen-AI Mission: Lunglei’s Gen-Alpha, Empowered by AI”, the programme seeks to familiarise students with generative artificial intelligence, commonly used AI platforms and their practical applications. The initiative is being jointly implemented by the District Education Office and the CodeYogi Foundation under the leadership of the district administration.

The launch took place at Government High School in Lunglei, where the Chief Minister highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy and encouraged students to develop the skills needed to adapt to emerging technologies.

Lunglei Gen-AI Mission to Cover 80 Schools

The first phase of the Lunglei Gen-AI Mission will reach over 5,500 students studying in 80 selected schools across the district. The programme is designed to introduce artificial intelligence at the school level and provide students with opportunities to understand and explore the technology.

According to officials, the CodeYogi Foundation has developed 30 instructional learning modules for the programme. Each module is designed to take approximately one hour and covers different aspects of artificial intelligence, including its fundamentals, contemporary AI platforms and their real-world applications.

One of the key features of the initiative is that the learning modules will be provided free of cost. Students will be able to complete the lessons at their own pace with guidance and supervision from teachers.

The self-paced approach is expected to make the programme accessible to students with different learning speeds while allowing schools to incorporate AI education into their existing academic activities.

The curriculum is also intended to help students understand how to use AI effectively and responsibly, including awareness of potential risks associated with the technology.

Lalduhoma Calls for Greater AI Awareness Among Students

Addressing the launch programme, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said artificial intelligence had become an integral part of everyday life. He stressed that students needed to understand the technology and learn how to use it productively.

He also pointed to Mizoram’s growing digital capabilities, highlighting the availability of the Mizo language on Google Translate since 2022. According to him, this development has made it easier for people to interact with technology and AI-based tools in their own language.

The Chief Minister also referred to the state government’s increasing adoption of digital governance systems, including e-office facilities, electronic files and online portals.

“There is no reason why Mizoram cannot become a digital state,” Lalduhoma said.

He identified the state’s high literacy rate, relatively small population and widespread English literacy as important advantages that could help Mizoram advance in the digital technology sector.

He urged students to complete the learning modules with dedication and use their knowledge to develop innovative ideas. He also encouraged government employees to continuously upgrade their technological skills and remain prepared for changes in the digital landscape.

Mizoram Looks to Expand AI Education Beyond Lunglei

The state government hopes that the Lunglei Gen-AI Mission will eventually be extended to other districts, making artificial intelligence education accessible to more students across Mizoram.

Lalduhoma appreciated the CodeYogi Foundation for supporting the programme through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. He also highlighted the government’s establishment of a dedicated CSR Cell to attract corporate participation in development projects.

The partnership between the district administration, education authorities and the foundation reflects an effort to bring additional resources and expertise into the state’s education system.

If successfully expanded, the programme could provide a foundation for introducing structured AI learning opportunities in more government schools across the state.

The initiative also comes at a time when educational institutions across India are increasingly exploring ways to introduce artificial intelligence, digital skills and technology-based learning into classrooms.

AI Mission Complements Other Education Initiatives

Lalduhoma also highlighted several educational and developmental initiatives already introduced in Lunglei district.

These include the state’s first Cosmic Class, which promotes interest in astronomy and space science, along with astronomy laboratories established in three schools.

Other programmes include the Learning Bridges Programme, which focuses on students who have dropped out of school, and the Book Nest Initiative, aimed at encouraging reading habits.

The district has also introduced Project Period Pride, which focuses on menstrual health awareness, and MoneyWise, a programme designed to improve financial literacy.

Another initiative, “Be Deputy Commissioner for a Day”, provides an opportunity to familiarise participants with administrative responsibilities and governance.

Together, these programmes reflect a broader effort to strengthen education through academic learning, practical knowledge, scientific awareness and life skills.

Digital Education Linked to Mizoram’s Vision 2047

The Chief Minister also connected the state’s digital transformation efforts with its long-term economic ambitions under the Transformed Mizoram Vision 2047.

He said Mizoram aims to increase its contribution to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current 0.1 per cent to 1 per cent by 2047.

Achieving this target, he stressed, would require stronger coordination and convergence among government departments, alongside greater adoption of technology and improved institutional capabilities.

The Lunglei Gen-AI Mission represents an early investment in developing technology awareness among the younger generation. By providing free AI learning opportunities to thousands of students, Mizoram is seeking to prepare its schoolchildren for future academic and professional opportunities.

As the first phase moves forward, its implementation across 80 schools will be important in determining how the programme can be strengthened and potentially replicated in other districts. The initiative signals the state’s growing emphasis on digital education and its ambition to equip the next generation with skills relevant to a rapidly changing world.
