Sikkim Tourism Gets Major Digital Boost With Four New Initiatives

Sikkim tourism has received a major digital push with the state government launching four new technology-driven initiatives aimed at improving visitor services, strengthening institutional efficiency and promoting adventure travel. The initiatives were launched by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department on October 6, 2026, as Sikkim continues its efforts to build a more accessible and technology-enabled tourism ecosystem.

Four digital initiatives launched

The four initiatives include an Adventure Fest web portal, e-Office implementation at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), e-Office adoption by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC), and an upgraded Atithis GIS portal.

The Adventure Fest web portal was developed for the Sikkim Adventure Tourism Fest 2026, scheduled from November 1 to 7 in Namchi district. Officials demonstrated the portal’s key features and functions through a video presentation during the launch programme. The festival is expected to provide another platform to promote the state’s adventure tourism offerings and attract visitors interested in outdoor activities.

The other two initiatives focus on improving internal administration. With the adoption of e-Office, IHM will become the first institute in Sikkim to shift to a fully online system. STDC, meanwhile, will become the state’s first public sector undertaking to adopt e-Office.

Upgraded Atithis GIS simplifies visitor services

The upgraded Atithis GIS portal is designed to make tourism-related processes easier for visitors and service providers. Its new features include a simplified booking process, a guest self-booking facility and online payment options that allow instant transactions.

The upgrade builds on the state’s broader effort to digitise tourism services. The Atithi system has been used for guest information management and collection of the Tourism Sustainability Development Fund. The department has also been expanding digital services for hotels, homestays and other tourism establishments.

In August, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department launched an online registration and renewal system for hotels and resorts, homestays, bed-and-breakfast establishments, service apartments, holiday homes and restaurants. The system allows eligible establishments to apply, pay fees and download certificates online through Sikkim’s Single Sign-On platform.

Sikkim tourism moves towards smarter digital governance

The latest launches are part of a wider digital transformation underway across the tourism sector. In June, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department introduced its e-Office web application for official work. The platform allows documents to be uploaded digitally, proposals to be tracked in real time and district tourism offices to connect with the department’s headquarters.

The government has also been working on an Integrated Online Permit System for restricted and protected areas. The proposed system is intended to reduce paperwork, improve transparency, enable digital payments and strengthen monitoring of tourist movement. It is planned around the principle of “One Permit, One Agency” and is aimed at making permit processing more convenient while improving accountability.

Focus on digital access and AI

The latest measures come shortly after Sikkim observed World Tourism Day 2026 with a focus on “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Re-design Tourism”. During the programme, officials highlighted several existing digital services, including the Sikkim Tourism portal and Sikkim Darshan app.

The Sikkim Darshan app provides information on more than 50 destinations through multilingual audio guides, QR-code-enabled information, maps and emergency contacts. The tourism portal brings permits, traveller information and other services together, while online registration systems support tourism establishments.

The state has also encouraged tourism stakeholders to explore artificial intelligence tools to improve efficiency and accessibility. Officials have linked digital transformation with the broader objective of making travel easier while supporting sustainable tourism development.

A broader push for tourism growth

The four new initiatives add to a growing digital framework covering tourism promotion, administration, accommodation registration, visitor information and permit management. They also come as Sikkim prepares for major tourism events, including the Adventure Tourism Fest in November and the Sikkim Travel & Tourism Fair later that month.

By combining online services with stronger institutional systems, the state is seeking to reduce paperwork, improve convenience and create more efficient interactions between tourists, businesses and government agencies. The latest measures indicate that technology is becoming an increasingly important part of Sikkim’s strategy to strengthen its tourism economy while maintaining its focus on sustainable and community-oriented development.
