Sikkim Tourism has received the Award of Excellence at the Travel & Tourism Fair (TTF) Mumbai 2026 for promoting rural and sustainable tourism. The recognition highlights the Himalayan state’s continued efforts to develop responsible, community-based tourism while protecting its natural and cultural assets.
Sikkim Tourism makes strong mark at TTF Mumbai
The award came after Sikkim participated as a Partner State at TTF Mumbai under the Sikkim INSPIRES initiative. The three-day event was held from August 20 to 22 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. TTF is among India’s major travel trade platforms and provides states and tourism businesses with opportunities to reach new domestic markets.
At the event, the state presented a wide range of tourism offerings. These included rural tourism initiatives, nature-based experiences, cultural attractions, destinations and hospitality products. The pavilion also highlighted experiences designed to connect visitors with local communities and the natural environment.
The Sikkim pavilion attracted strong interest from visitors, tourism professionals and travel trade representatives. Officials said engagement was particularly encouraging on the second day of the fair. Several tour packages were also reportedly booked during interactions at the pavilion.
Rural tourism remains a key focus
The Award of Excellence is significant because it recognises the state’s approach to tourism beyond conventional sightseeing. Rural tourism can create opportunities for local communities by encouraging visitors to explore villages, local culture, traditional practices and community-run hospitality.
More than 15 tourism stakeholders participated in the Mumbai event, according to the state tourism department. The group included representatives of tourism stakeholder associations, Village Tourism Development Committee members from Rabong and Pakyong, Buddha Park representatives, hotel owners and travel agencies.
Such participation allows smaller tourism enterprises and local stakeholders to connect directly with travel agencies and tour operators from larger markets. It can also help rural destinations gain visibility among travellers looking for experiential and nature-based holidays.
Sustainable tourism gains greater attention
The latest recognition also reinforces Sikkim’s focus on balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation. The state has increasingly positioned sustainability and responsible travel as important parts of its tourism strategy.
Sikkim’s official tourism portal describes the state as a destination known for sustainability, cleanliness and hospitality. It currently promotes more than 400 tourist destinations, over 300 monasteries and heritage sites, and more than 20 tourism circuits.
The approach is particularly relevant for a Himalayan destination where increased visitor numbers can place pressure on fragile ecosystems and local infrastructure. Promoting community participation and responsible travel can help ensure that tourism benefits residents while limiting environmental impacts.
The latest award therefore adds to a growing list of recognitions for Sikkim’s tourism sector. Earlier in 2026, the state received the India Today Tourism Survey & Awards recognition for the “Most Instagrammable Landscape – Hairpin Bends near Zuluk, Sikkim.” The award also highlighted the state’s natural appeal and focus on sustainable and experiential tourism.
Sikkim Tourism strengthens national market links
The Mumbai event also created opportunities for the state’s tourism industry to expand its presence in Maharashtra and other parts of India. According to the department, stakeholders established new business contacts, strengthened existing trade relationships and explored potential partnerships with travel agencies and tour operators.
The response from the Mumbai market is particularly important because stronger trade connections can translate into greater visibility for lesser-known destinations and locally operated tourism products. Reported bookings and enquiries during the fair indicate immediate commercial interest in Sikkim’s offerings.
Officials and participating stakeholders credited the support of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Tshering T. Bhutia for providing a platform to promote the state’s tourism potential at a major national forum.
Award adds momentum to Sikkim’s tourism strategy
The recognition at TTF Mumbai comes at a time when travellers are increasingly seeking nature, culture and authentic local experiences. For Sikkim, this creates an opportunity to promote tourism that spreads economic benefits beyond major tourist centres.
The department said the participation concluded with strong visitor engagement, business enquiries, reported tour bookings and enhanced trade networking. It also described the award as an important step towards strengthening the state’s tourism presence in Maharashtra and the wider national market.
For Sikkim Tourism, the Award of Excellence is therefore more than a recognition at a travel trade event. It underlines the state’s attempt to combine tourism growth with environmental responsibility, local participation and sustainable livelihoods. With stronger market connections and continued promotion of rural and nature-based experiences, Sikkim is seeking to build a tourism model that remains attractive to visitors while supporting the communities and landscapes that define the state.
