DD Lapang was remembered by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma as a father figure, mentor and guiding force whose contribution to the state went far beyond electoral politics. As Meghalaya marks the first anniversary of the veteran leader’s death, tributes have renewed focus on his decades-long public service, his role in shaping Ri-Bhoi and the values he passed on to a younger generation of political leaders.
Conrad Sangma recalls a personal bond with Lapang
Conrad Sangma’s association with Lapang was not limited to politics. The chief minister recalled knowing the veteran leader from childhood through his father, former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A. Sangma. Their relationship later developed further when both served in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
At Lapang’s state funeral in September 2025, Conrad described him as a self-made leader who devoted his life to Meghalaya and its people. He said Lapang’s journey was closely connected with the journey of Meghalaya itself.
The chief minister also remembered Lapang as a powerful orator and an experienced administrator who served as minister, chief minister and Leader of the Opposition. His ability to communicate with people across social and political divisions remained one of his defining qualities.
Conrad said Lapang’s memory would remain a guiding light for future generations.
DD Lapang’s political legacy in Meghalaya
Lapang was one of Meghalaya’s most experienced political leaders. He served as chief minister four times and remained active in public life for several decades.
His political career was closely associated with the development of Meghalaya after the state was formed in 1972. He was particularly associated with Ri-Bhoi, where he played an important role in the district’s creation and subsequent development.
His contributions also extended to Baghmara, administration, education, healthcare and welfare initiatives. During his years in public life, he supported efforts to expand institutions and services aimed at improving opportunities for people across the state.
Conrad highlighted Lapang’s work in strengthening administration, investing in young people and promoting inclusivity and justice. He also recalled his efforts toward peace and dialogue, including initiatives linked to ceasefire agreements.
Among the initiatives associated with his leadership were the creation and development of districts, establishment of the Meghalaya State Women Commission and healthcare efforts including cancer detection programmes.
A mentor beyond party politics
Lapang’s influence was not restricted to those who shared his political affiliation. Leaders across party lines have remembered his ability to guide younger politicians and encourage them to remain focused on public service.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has recalled that Lapang gave him an opportunity to serve as minister of state after he was first elected an MLA in 2003. Tynsong said the experience allowed him to gain valuable administrative knowledge under Lapang’s guidance.
Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma also described Lapang as a role model before he entered politics. He recalled the former chief minister’s patience, perseverance and willingness to nurture colleagues.
These accounts underline the broader influence Lapang had on Meghalaya’s political generation. His approach was often associated with consultation, patience and an emphasis on serving people rather than simply holding office.
First death anniversary renews focus on his legacy
The first anniversary of Lapang’s death has brought renewed attention to his contribution. The Dr DD Lapang Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, organised the first Dr DD Lapang Memorial Lecture on September 10, 2026. The programme also included the distribution of prizes for an essay competition held in his memory.
At the memorial programme, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem described Lapang as the “father of Ri-Bhoi” and said his contribution to the creation and development of the district would continue to be remembered.
The memorial activities also reflect the continuing effort to preserve Lapang’s ideas for younger generations. His connection with education remained an important part of his public life, with his family recalling his belief that knowledge could help people find their way forward.
Remembering a leader of service
Lapang died in Shillong on September 12, 2025, after a long public career. Meghalaya observed three days of state mourning following his death, while his funeral was held with full state honours. Political leaders from across parties joined people from different sections of society in paying their final respects.
For Conrad Sangma, however, Lapang’s legacy is not simply about the offices he held or the political milestones he achieved. It is also about the example he set through decades of service.
As Meghalaya continues to remember its former chief minister, the focus is increasingly shifting from mourning to preserving his values. His emphasis on dialogue, public service, education, development and compassion remains part of the political legacy he left behind. For a new generation of leaders, that legacy continues to serve as a reminder that public life is ultimately measured by the people and institutions left stronger behind.
