The Mayer Gomon Carnival is set to bring international attention to Tripura as Agartala prepares to host the fifth edition of its annual Durga Puja carnival on October 23, 2026. At least 10 foreign delegates and representatives of the Government of India are expected to attend the cultural event, which marks the grand culmination of Durga Puja celebrations in the state capital. The Tripura government aims to use the occasion to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage, strengthen tourism prospects and attract visitors from across India and abroad.
Foreign Delegates Expected at the Mayer Gomon Carnival
The upcoming celebration is expected to receive an international audience, with representatives from several foreign missions showing interest in attending the event. According to reports, diplomats from the United States, Russia and Bangladesh are among those expected to participate.
Information and Cultural Affairs Department Secretary Kiran Gitte said the state government had approached various embassies and consulates to introduce them to Tripura’s cultural traditions. Although holiday closures during the Durga Puja period affected communication with some prospective visitors, officials remained hopeful that at least 10 foreign delegates would attend.
Representatives of the Government of India are also expected to be present, adding to the significance of the programme. Their participation could provide an opportunity to promote Tripura as a destination for cultural tourism and international engagement.
Agartala Prepares for the October 23 Celebration
The main venue for the carnival will be located in front of Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Agartala. The location has served as the central venue since 2024, providing a gathering point for participating Durga Puja committees and visitors.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha is scheduled to inaugurate the event at 5 pm on October 23. Cabinet members, elected representatives, municipal officials and other dignitaries are also expected to attend.
Preparations are being coordinated by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department and the Agartala Municipal Corporation, with support from several other government departments. Officials have reviewed arrangements concerning the main stage, security, traffic movement and crowd management.
The administration is working to ensure that the celebration proceeds smoothly while allowing residents and visitors to experience the cultural programme safely.
Cultural Heritage and Durga Puja Traditions on Display
The Mayer Gomon Carnival celebrates the traditions associated with Durga Puja and the ceremonial farewell to Goddess Durga. The programme brings together Durga Puja committees from Agartala and neighbouring areas, allowing them to showcase their artistic creativity, decorations and cultural practices.
The fifth edition is expected to feature elaborate displays and presentations reflecting the diversity of the region’s festive celebrations. Participating committees will have an opportunity to present their work before a larger audience, making the carnival an important platform for community participation and cultural expression.
The event has been organised in Agartala since 2022 and has gradually developed into a prominent feature of Tripura’s annual festive calendar. Its growing popularity has encouraged the government to explore ways to expand its reach beyond the state.
Government Focuses on Tourism Development
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has emphasised the need to promote the carnival more widely and make it a stronger attraction for tourists. During a preparatory meeting at Muktadhara Auditorium in September, he directed departments to coordinate their efforts and complete essential arrangements ahead of the celebrations.
The chief minister also proposed exploring special tourism packages combining Durga Puja celebrations with the carnival. Such packages could encourage visitors to experience the festival while discovering Tripura’s cultural heritage and other attractions.
The state government sees the event as an opportunity to strengthen Tripura’s visibility on national and international tourism platforms. The expected presence of foreign delegates could further support these efforts by introducing international visitors to the state’s traditions.
Officials have also highlighted the importance of coordinated planning among government departments, civic authorities and participating Puja committees to achieve these objectives.
Security and Traffic Management Arrangements
With large crowds expected, authorities are prioritising public safety and efficient traffic management. Officials have reviewed security deployment, barricading, watchtowers, health services and drinking water facilities along the carnival route connecting the main venue to Dashami Ghat.
The West Tripura district administration has also announced traffic restrictions for October 23. According to the reported plan, the road from Ujjayanta Palace to Dashami Ghat, passing through Jackson Gate, Kaman Chowmuhani, Surya Chowmuhani, Post Office Chowmuhani, Paradise Chowmuhani and Battala, will become a non-vehicular zone from 2 pm.
These measures are intended to reduce congestion and ensure the safe movement of participants and spectators. Police and other departments are coordinating arrangements to minimise disruption during the event. Visitors should follow official traffic advisories and plan their journeys accordingly.
Growing Participation Strengthens the Carnival
The increasing popularity of the celebration is reflected in the participation of Durga Puja committees from across Agartala and nearby areas. According to reports from the September preparatory meeting, the city recorded 697 Durga Puja celebrations last year.
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder has stressed cooperation among organisers, authorities and residents to ensure successful festivities. The civic body has introduced a single-window system for Puja-related permissions and waived registration fees, measures intended to simplify arrangements for participating clubs.
Officials have also called for responsible conduct, compliance with traffic regulations and adequate safety measures at Puja venues. Effective waste management, sufficient lighting and the deployment of volunteers remain important parts of the broader festive preparations.
As Agartala prepares for October 23, the carnival is emerging as more than a ceremonial farewell to Goddess Durga. The expected international participation, growing public interest and government-backed tourism initiatives could help establish the event as a recognised cultural attraction. With coordinated preparations and strong community involvement, Tripura hopes to present its traditions to a wider audience while creating new opportunities for tourism and cultural exchange.
