Tripura essential commodity supply has come under renewed government review as the state prepares for the upcoming Durga Puja festivities. The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department held a high-level meeting on September 21 to assess availability, distribution and transportation arrangements and to strengthen measures against hoarding and black marketing.
The review comes as demand for food, fuel and other daily-use products is expected to rise during the festival season. Officials said the priority is to keep essential commodities available at affordable prices and prevent artificial shortages from affecting consumers.

The review meeting was chaired by the Principal Secretary of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department. It brought together stakeholders from across the supply chain, including LPG dealers, petroleum companies, business and merchant associations, ration shop dealers, distributors and public representatives.
District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police also attended the discussions. Their participation reflects the need for coordination between supply agencies and law-enforcement authorities as the movement of goods and people increases during Durga Puja.
Director of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Sumit Lodh said the department wants consumers to receive essential commodities smoothly and at affordable prices throughout the Puja period.
The government has therefore placed supply continuity and market stability at the centre of its preparations.
Measures target hoarding and black marketing
Officials also discussed measures to prevent hoarding, black marketing and artificial shortages during the festive period. Authorities warned that action would be taken against traders or individuals found involved in such practices.
Festival periods can bring a sharp increase in demand for household goods. Any disruption in supply or unusual stockpiling can put additional pressure on retail prices. By reviewing stocks and distribution arrangements in advance, the administration aims to reduce the possibility of shortages reaching consumers.
The involvement of merchant associations and distributors is also intended to improve communication between the government and businesses. This could help authorities identify emerging supply problems before they affect local markets.
Transport routes and fuel supply under review
Transportation formed another important part of the meeting. Officials reviewed routes for supply vehicles and security arrangements to support the uninterrupted movement of essential goods across Tripura.
Fuel distribution also received attention because petrol, diesel and LPG remain critical to households, businesses and transportation services during the festival season. Representatives of Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, along with LPG dealers, participated in the meeting.
The government’s approach seeks to ensure that supply vehicles can move efficiently while security agencies address potential disruptions along important routes.
Earlier review focused on prices and availability
The latest meeting follows a broader review conducted by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on August 24. At that meeting, officials and representatives of the Tripura Wholesale Grocery Merchant Association examined the availability and prevailing prices of rice, edible oil, pulses, sugar, potatoes and onions.
The August review also stressed coordination between the government and traders to maintain adequate stocks and prevent unnecessary price fluctuations.
In a separate discussion, the minister reviewed petroleum supply arrangements with senior Food Department officials, Indian Oil representatives and members of the Tripura Petroleum Dealers’ Association. Officials discussed the operation of the newly constructed Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants depot at Sekerkote and the transportation of fuel to different districts.
These steps indicate that the administration has been monitoring both commodity and fuel supply ahead of the festive period.
Focus remains on consumers
With Durga Puja approaching, the government’s latest review places particular emphasis on ensuring that consumers do not face shortages or unreasonable price increases. The administration has called for coordinated action involving officials, traders, distributors and enforcement agencies.
The effectiveness of the measures will depend on how consistently supplies reach markets and whether authorities can respond quickly to hoarding, black marketing or transport disruptions. For consumers, the immediate priority remains reliable access to daily necessities at reasonable prices.
