NEP 2020 implementation takes centre stage in Nagaland as the state hosts the first Northeast regional conclave dedicated to the National Education Policy 2020 on September 18 and 19. The two-day meeting at JP Parks and Banquets in Naga United village, Chümoukedima, brings together education leaders and stakeholders from all eight Northeastern states to discuss regional challenges and prepare a common roadmap.
Eight Northeast states join education dialogue
The conclave, organised by the Nagaland government in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Education, carries the theme “Implementation of NEP 2020: Vision, Challenges & Opportunities for the North Eastern States.”
Nagaland Higher Education and Tourism Minister Temjen Imna Along announced the event in Dimapur on September 17. He said the meeting would allow the states to identify problems faced by educational institutions and develop task lists and action plans to address them. More than 300 participants are expected to attend.
Education ministers from several Northeastern states, senior officials, university vice-chancellors, policymakers and other education stakeholders are taking part in the discussions. The meeting is intended to move beyond individual state-level experiences and identify issues that require a coordinated regional response.
NEP 2020 implementation faces regional challenges
The discussions will cover school education, higher education and technical education, along with innovation, technology and skill development. Officials are expected to examine gaps in infrastructure, teaching capacity, curriculum changes, technology access and other requirements for putting the policy into practice.
Higher and Technical Education Secretary Sarita Yadav said the objective was to identify implementation gaps and develop solutions that could be placed before the Centre from a collective Northeast perspective. The proposed roadmap is therefore expected to document region-specific concerns while also identifying areas where states can cooperate.
The approach reflects the wider design of NEP 2020, which calls for phased implementation and coordination among the Centre, states and education institutions. The Union government has also outlined task-based implementation plans linking policy recommendations with responsible agencies, timelines and expected outcomes.
Focus on language, skills and technology
One important regional issue is the diversity of languages and communities across the Northeast. At the inaugural session in Chümoukedima on September 18, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu highlighted the relevance of mother-tongue education for the region’s tribal communities and linguistic heritage. He also shared Assam’s experience of implementing the policy.
The emphasis on skills, innovation and technology also reflects the changing requirements of education and employment. NEP 2020 promotes multidisciplinary learning, vocational education, flexible academic pathways and the use of technology across the education system.
For Nagaland, the discussions build on work already underway in higher education. The state’s 2025-26 administrative report lists proposals linked to NEP 2020, including a Choice Based Credit System, additional faculty positions, science subjects, infrastructure upgrades, teacher education, information technology facilities and vocational and skill courses.
Nagaland seeks a common roadmap
The conclave is expected to produce a set of recommendations and action points for the Northeast. Officials have indicated that the region’s collective concerns could subsequently be presented to the Centre for consideration.
The event also follows a recent focus on NEP-related capacity building in Nagaland. On August 27, Nagaland University held an online programme on implementing NEP 2020 in higher education institutions. The programme discussed initiatives including the Academic Bank of Credits, SWAYAM, MOOCs, Indian Knowledge Systems and AI-related courses and syllabi.
As the two-day meeting continues, the central issue will be how national education reforms can respond to the Northeast’s distinct geographic, linguistic, cultural and institutional realities. A shared roadmap could help the eight states compare experiences, identify common gaps and place coordinated recommendations before the Union government.
The Nagaland conclave thus creates a regional platform for turning broad policy goals into practical implementation priorities, while keeping the diverse education needs of the Northeast at the centre of the discussion.
