Chongtham Vikram, a 54-year-old Manipuri guitarist, retired musician and music teacher, died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of people near his residence in Kilokari village in southeast Delhi. Police said the incident followed a dispute over alleged noise and disturbance outside his home. Several suspects, including a minor, have been detained as the investigation continues.

Chongtham Vikram assaulted after noise dispute

According to Delhi Police, a PCR call regarding the alleged assault was received at Sunlight Colony Police Station on September 7. A preliminary inquiry indicated that the musician had objected to alleged shouting and nuisance by delivery workers and dhaba staff operating near his residence.

Police said he went downstairs to raise the issue. The situation allegedly escalated, and he was attacked with fists and blows by a group of people. He suffered injuries and was taken to Holy Family Hospital by his son, Yaiphaba.

Despite receiving treatment, he later succumbed to his injuries, police said. Authorities are now examining the circumstances that led to the assault and the events that followed it.

Suspects detained as police investigate

Police have detained or apprehended several people in connection with the case, with reports indicating that a minor is among those being questioned. Officials are working to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the responsibility of each person allegedly involved.

The police have said that necessary legal action is being taken and that further facts will be established during the investigation. The motive behind the assault has also not been conclusively established at this stage.

The case has drawn attention from members of Delhi’s Northeast community. The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University, condemned the alleged assault and called for a swift and impartial investigation. Community members and civil society representatives also gathered at Sunlight Colony Police Station, demanding that those responsible be identified and dealt with according to law.

Chongtham Vikram was a prominent Manipuri musician

The death has also caused concern across Manipur’s music community. Chongtham Vikram was regarded as an important figure in the state’s Western music scene and had performed with bands including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark.

He was also the eldest son of renowned Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala. His career connected him with generations of musicians and listeners who helped shape the Western music movement in Manipur. His death has therefore been widely viewed as a loss to the state’s cultural and musical community.

Reports of the incident have also prompted renewed concerns among members of the Northeast community living in Delhi. Community representatives have called for the investigation to establish the facts without delay and ensure accountability if the allegations are proven.

Racial motive allegation remains unconfirmed

Some members of the Northeast community have alleged that the assault could have involved racial targeting. However, Delhi Police has not established any racial motive so far.

Officials are continuing to examine the circumstances and motive behind the incident. It is therefore important to distinguish between allegations raised by community members and facts established through the police investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the altercation, the identities and roles of the suspects, and the precise cause of death will be important parts of the investigation. Police are expected to gather statements and other evidence as they proceed with the case.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast in the national capital, particularly when ordinary disputes escalate into violence. Community organisations have urged authorities to ensure that the case is investigated fairly and that appropriate legal action follows if wrongdoing is established.

For now, the investigation remains underway. Chongtham Vikram’s death has left Manipur’s music fraternity mourning while his family, friends and members of the Northeast community await clarity on what happened and accountability for those found responsible.
