Manipuri musician death in Delhi has triggered concern across the Northeast, with Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia calling for a swift and thorough investigation into the killing of music teacher and guitarist Chongtham Vikram Singh. Scindia said the safety and dignity of people from the Northeast are “non-negotiable” after the 54-year-old was allegedly assaulted in southeast Delhi.
Singh died after sustaining serious injuries in an alleged assault outside his residence in Kilokari village near Ashram. The incident has prompted outrage among members of the Northeast community and renewed concerns over the safety of people from the region living in the national capital.
Scindia calls for swift investigation
Scindia, who is the Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, expressed condolences to Singh’s family following the Manipuri musician death. He urged the Delhi Police to conduct a prompt and comprehensive investigation.
The minister stressed that people from the Northeast must be able to live with safety and dignity. His remarks came as political leaders, civil society groups and members of the Northeast community demanded accountability in the case.
The incident has also drawn reactions from other leaders in the Northeast. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed concern and said the killing had reopened painful concerns about discrimination and violence faced by people from the region in Delhi.
How the Delhi assault unfolded
According to police and reports, Singh had objected to alleged shouting and nuisance outside his rented home late on Sunday night. The group reportedly included delivery workers and staff associated with eateries and dhabas operating near his residence.
Singh went downstairs to raise the issue. The confrontation allegedly turned violent, with the group assaulting him with punches and blows. Reports said Singh was chased into his apartment building and attacked in the stairway area.
His son, Yaiphaba, took him to Holy Family Hospital for treatment. However, Singh later succumbed to his injuries. Police have registered a murder case and detained or arrested all those allegedly involved, including a juvenile.
Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the exact sequence of events. Reports have said eight people were apprehended in connection with the case, including seven adults and a minor.

Singh was also the eldest son of renowned Manipuri classical singer Chongtham Kamala. His family background and long contribution to music have added to the sense of loss following the incident.
