Tensions ran high at the Morigaon District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Office on Friday as elected representatives and their supporters staged a massive demonstration over delays in forming the Mikirgaon Gaon Panchayat body under the Kapili Development Block. Protesters Demand Immediate Panchayat Formation
Protesters gathered in large numbers outside the DRDA office. Holding banners and shouting slogans, they demanded immediate action from the district administration.
“We have been waiting for months. Development work is on hold because the Morigaon Panchayat body has not been constituted,” said Ranjit Das, an elected ward member.
The protesters claimed the delay hampers local schemes, road construction, and welfare activities.
No Progress Despite Repeated Appeals
According to sources, the election to the Mikirgaon Gaon Panchayat concluded over six months ago. Yet, the panchayat body has not been formally constituted due to pending administrative clearances.
“We have submitted memorandums to the Block Development Officer (BDO) and Deputy Commissioner several times,” said Kalpana Begum, another elected representative.
Officials cite procedural hurdles and pending government notifications as reasons for the delay.
Morigaon Panchayat Protest Highlights Development Bottlenecks
The Morigaon Panchayat protest is significant as it affects the Kapili Development Block’s progress.
Without a functioning panchayat body, decisions on development funds, beneficiary selection for schemes, and maintenance of rural infrastructure remain in limbo.
“People in villages are suffering. Roads remain incomplete. Pensions and ration cards are delayed,” said protester Pranab Bora.
Villagers from Mikirgaon and surrounding areas expressed support for the agitation, fearing prolonged administrative paralysis.
Administration Promises Swift Resolution
Officials at the DRDA office assured the protesters that the matter would be resolved soon.
“We have forwarded the necessary documents to higher authorities. We hope to complete the formation of the Morigaon Panchayat body within the next two weeks,” said DRDA Project Director Manoj Kalita.
However, protesters remain sceptical and vowed to intensify their agitation if no action is taken.
Political Reactions Pour In
Local political parties weighed in on the issue, criticising the delay as negligence towards grassroots democracy.
“This delay violates democratic rights. People have elected their representatives. They must be allowed to work,” said Pradip Chandra Das of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which governs the state, acknowledged the concerns and promised intervention.
“We understand the frustration behind the Morigaon Panchayat protest. The government will ensure the panchayat starts functioning soon,” said BJP leader Bijoy Kumar Sharma.
Grassroots Governance Vital for Development
Experts say delays in panchayat formation disrupt the flow of development funds and weaken democratic processes.
“The panchayat is the backbone of rural governance. Delays hurt people who rely on local bodies for essential services,” explained Prof. Anita Deka, political analyst at Gauhati University.
Proper functioning of panchayats ensures effective delivery of schemes like MGNREGA, housing projects, and social welfare benefits.
Call for Immediate Government Action
Protesters have warned of continuous protests if the situation remains unresolved.
“We will march to the DC’s office if the Morigaon Panchayat protest demands are ignored,” said protest leader Ranjit Das.
They urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and direct officials to complete the pending formalities.
Meanwhile, villagers await a swift resolution, hoping development projects can resume without further hindrance.
“We want our roads, drinking water, and health services. The government must act fast,” said villager Radha Das.
