The Assam government carried out a major eviction drive in Lakhimpur, displacing over 200 families and reclaiming 78 acres of land. This move, conducted in the Kadam Revenue Circle, aimed to free up government land for public use.
Authorities began the operation early in the morning. Over 600 security personnel ensured law and order during the process. Despite tight security, several families expressed their grief as they left behind homes built over decades.

Eviction Begins with Heavy Police Presence
By 6 a.m., bulldozers had entered the area. Local officials and police coordinated the action with military-like precision. They removed huts, tin sheds, and small shops that dotted the reclaimed zone. Many residents gathered their belongings and stood helpless as their homes came down.
The administration acted swiftly, clearing the area by late afternoon. Although no violence broke out, scenes of despair unfolded across the village. Women sat crying with children in their arms, while elders watched silently.
State Officials Justify the Action
Deputy Commissioner Somesh Kumar explained that the Assam Lakhimpur eviction followed prior notices. According to him, the land had been illegally occupied for years and was meant for state infrastructure.
“We followed legal protocols,” he said. “The area was identified for a government project that needs immediate space.”
Moreover, Kumar emphasized that the drive was part of a larger land reclamation campaign running across Assam. He also added that similar operations would continue in other districts.
Families Question Timing, Demand Rehabilitation
While the government insisted on legality, affected families shared a different story. Many claimed they had no alternative shelter. Some also said they never received proper notice about the eviction.
Raju Das, a daily wage worker, said, “We didn’t resist because we’re poor. But where will we go now with no help or roof?”
In response, several civil groups called for urgent rehabilitation. They demanded temporary shelters, food, and access to health services for the displaced.
Political and Public Reactions Follow
Political leaders reacted strongly to the eviction. While the ruling BJP backed the drive as necessary, opposition parties like Congress and AIUDF criticized the move.
AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam said, “These people lived here for years. Bulldozing their homes without resettlement is inhuman.”
On the other hand, BJP leaders defended the drive. They argued that land encroachments slow down development and create legal complications.
Public opinion remained divided. Some praised the administration for acting firmly, while others shared images of crying children and broken homes on social media.
Similar Drives Across Assam
The Assam Lakhimpur eviction is not a one-off event. Over the past two years, the state has launched eviction drives in Darrang, Hojai, and Sonitpur. These efforts aim to free up land for government schemes and remove illegal encroachments on forest and revenue land.
However, critics say the government often skips rehabilitation. They argue that these actions push already vulnerable groups into deeper poverty.
As the pattern continues, human rights groups are demanding clear guidelines on how to treat affected families. They say a balanced policy is needed—one that protects land while safeguarding human dignity.
Government Plans Ahead
State officials announced that the cleared land will be used for a public infrastructure project. Although they did not share full details, they hinted at plans related to housing or education.
Meanwhile, the administration has asked local authorities to identify eligible families for temporary relief. Officials also said they would involve social workers and NGOs in the rehabilitation process.
While the government focuses on future development, evicted families are left to rebuild from scratch. Their demand is simple—shelter, security, and dignity.
