The Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati is undergoing a major modernization project, with new attractions including a walk-in bird aviary, improved animal enclosures and a proposed toy train service. The redevelopment aims to strengthen wildlife conservation facilities while improving the experience for visitors.
The project, initially estimated at around Rs 340 crore, has since been reported at approximately Rs 345 crore to Rs 360 crore. It includes a modern veterinary hospital, a dedicated wildlife rescue centre, a natural history museum and upgraded visitor amenities.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the ongoing work during a visit to the zoo on July 11. He also suggested examining the feasibility of an internal train service to help visitors move around the large premises.
Walk-In Bird Aviary Among Major Attractions
One of the key features of the modernization project is a large walk-in aviary designed to provide visitors with a closer experience of bird habitats.
The project also includes new bird enclosures and improvements to existing facilities.
The proposed aviary is expected to support wildlife education and offer visitors an opportunity to observe birds in a more natural setting.
Officials are working to develop facilities that balance visitor experience with animal welfare and conservation requirements.
Toy Train Proposed for Visitor Convenience
During his inspection, Sarma suggested exploring an internal train service within the zoo.
The proposed toy train could help visitors travel across the sprawling premises more conveniently, particularly families with children and elderly visitors.
The suggestion forms part of wider efforts to improve visitor facilities.
The zoo’s modernization plan also includes improved pathways, visitor amenities and infrastructure designed to make movement across the campus easier.
The train service remains a proposal, with further examination required before any implementation.
Modern Veterinary Hospital and Rescue Centre
The redevelopment includes a modern veterinary hospital and a dedicated wildlife rescue centre.
These facilities are intended to strengthen animal healthcare, treatment, rehabilitation and conservation support.
The hospital will provide improved infrastructure for veterinary services, while the rescue centre will support the care of injured, rescued and distressed wildlife.
The project also includes a natural history museum to promote awareness of biodiversity and wildlife conservation.
New Animal Enclosures to Improve Habitats
The modernization programme includes redesigned and upgraded enclosures for several animal species.
The objective is to provide better living conditions and more suitable habitats for animals housed at the zoo.
The development plan covers facilities for species including big cats, bears, herbivores and other wildlife.
The redevelopment is also expected to improve the zoo’s capacity for conservation, research and environmental education.
Around 27 Per Cent of Work Completed
During the July review, the Chief Minister said approximately 27 per cent of the modernization work had been completed.
He directed officials to study the facilities and operational practices of leading zoological parks across India.
The review focused on improving animal care, conservation infrastructure and visitor experience.
The government aims to develop the Assam State Zoo into a modern wildlife conservation and tourism destination.
Assam State Zoo’s Importance to Guwahati
Established in 1957, the Assam State Zoo is the largest zoo in Northeast India.
Located in Guwahati, it covers approximately 1.75 square kilometres and includes a substantial area of natural forest.
The zoo houses animals, birds and reptiles, including several species native to Northeast India.
It also operates as a centre for wildlife conservation, rescue, rehabilitation and environmental awareness.
The Assam government has identified the modernization project as a major step towards improving the zoo’s infrastructure and conservation facilities.
A New Experience for Visitors
With upgraded animal habitats, a walk-in aviary, a modern veterinary hospital and improved visitor facilities, the project is expected to reshape the zoo experience.
The proposed toy train could further improve accessibility within the premises if approved.
The modernization aims to combine wildlife conservation with education and responsible tourism, strengthening the Assam State Zoo’s role as a major attraction in Guwahati and the Northeast.
