Banana Pseudostem Products Get Major Boost in Meghalaya

Banana pseudostem products are set to gain a major boost in Meghalaya after the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) inaugurated a Common Facility Centre (CFC) at Umsiang village in Ri-Bhoi district. The facility aims to turn discarded banana pseudostem into useful commercial products while creating new opportunities for rural entrepreneurship, skill development and sustainable livelihoods.

The CFC has been established by NECTAR, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, with funding support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) under the PM-DevINE scheme. The initiative is part of a broader effort to create value from agricultural waste across the Northeast.

Meghalaya CFC focuses on banana pseudostem products

Banana plants generate considerable agricultural residue after harvesting, with the pseudostem often left behind or discarded. The new facility at Umsiang is designed to change that by processing this material into marketable goods.

The CFC will support the production of natural fibre, biodegradable sheets and handmade paper. These banana pseudostem products can provide alternatives to conventional materials while giving farmers and local entrepreneurs an additional source of income.

NECTAR officials have highlighted the potential of the model to combine waste management with rural enterprise. The initiative is expected to provide access to processing technology and encourage farmers, self-help groups and entrepreneurs to participate in value-addition activities.

Technology brings value to agricultural waste

The facility is equipped to demonstrate technologies that can extract fibre from banana pseudostem. During the inauguration, the NECTAR team demonstrated banana fibre extraction machinery and showcased the operational capabilities of the centre.

The technology is significant because banana pseudostem contains usable fibre that can be converted into several products. Earlier research and technology-development initiatives in India have also explored banana fibre for biodegradable dishware, nursery trays, paper and other environmentally friendly products.

The Meghalaya project therefore has the potential to create a wider value chain around bananas, extending economic activity beyond the sale of the fruit itself.

Opportunities for farmers and rural entrepreneurs

A key objective of the Umsiang CFC is to strengthen grassroots entrepreneurship. Farmers can potentially supply pseudostem that would otherwise be treated as waste, while trained workers and local enterprises can participate in processing and manufacturing.

The initiative also places emphasis on skill development. By making processing equipment and technical support available at the local level, the centre can help communities develop practical skills linked to banana pseudostem products.

Self-help groups are another important group expected to benefit. Such groups can potentially participate in fibre extraction, product manufacturing and other activities linked to the value chain. The approach could create supplementary income opportunities for rural households while encouraging greater use of locally available resources.

A wider Northeast value-chain initiative

The Umsiang facility is part of NECTAR’s larger project on the utilisation of banana pseudostem for value-added products. NECTAR’s annual report has documented the establishment and development of CFCs for banana pseudostem processing in several Northeastern locations. These facilities have involved technologies for fibre extraction, sap processing and other value-added activities.

The project has also explored products beyond fibre. Government-linked documentation on the initiative lists possibilities including liquid biofertiliser, vermicompost, paper, yarn, vegan leather and bakery products made using different parts or derivatives of banana pseudostem.

This approach supports the broader concept of turning agricultural waste into resources while reducing waste accumulation in farming areas.

Meghalaya could expand sustainable rural production

Meghalaya already has a strong connection with banana cultivation and traditional uses of different parts of the plant. The state’s Agriculture Department notes that banana fibre can be used for making bags, while the sheath and leaves can be used for ropes and wrapping materials.

The new CFC can build on this existing resource base by introducing more organised processing and modern technology. If production, training and market linkages develop successfully, banana pseudostem products could become an additional rural enterprise opportunity in Ri-Bhoi and potentially other parts of Meghalaya.

The initiative also comes at a time when sustainable materials and circular production models are receiving greater attention. Converting agricultural residue into useful goods can help reduce waste while creating economic value from materials that were previously underused.

Local innovation with wider potential

At the inauguration, senior officials and representatives interacted with farmers, local entrepreneurs and self-help groups and reviewed demonstrations at the facility. NECTAR Director General Dr Arun Kumar Sarma underlined the potential of the model for replication across the Northeast.

For Umsiang, the centre represents more than a new processing facility. It provides a platform where farming, technology, skills and entrepreneurship can come together. With sustained training and reliable market connections, banana pseudostem products could help turn an agricultural by-product into a source of rural income.

The Meghalaya initiative demonstrates how locally available agricultural resources can be linked with appropriate technology to support sustainable production. As the Umsiang CFC begins operations, its success could offer a practical model for expanding waste-to-value enterprises across the Northeast.
