Bhutan PM Tobgay calls Modi an ‘avatar of Vishnu’, recalls 2019 meeting

Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay has spoken warmly about his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tobgay recalled his meetings with Modi and described the Indian leader as an “avatar of Vishnu”.

Tobgay made the remarks while discussing India-Bhutan relations and his interactions with Modi. He highlighted the close relationship between the two countries and recalled an important meeting from 2019.

Tobgay Recalls 2019 Meeting With Modi

Tobgay recalled meeting Modi during his visit to India in 2019. The Bhutanese leader referred to the warmth and hospitality he received during the visit.

The two leaders have met several times over the years. Their meetings have focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Bhutan.

The relationship covers areas such as hydropower, trade, education, connectivity and development assistance.

‘Avatar of Vishnu’ Remark

While speaking about Modi, Tobgay used a religious reference and described him as an “avatar of Vishnu”.

The remark was made in the context of his personal interaction with the Indian Prime Minister. Tobgay spoke positively about Modi’s leadership and his approach towards Bhutan.

The comment has drawn attention because of its cultural and religious reference.

Strong India-Bhutan Relationship

India and Bhutan share a longstanding relationship based on close diplomatic, economic and security cooperation. India remains one of Bhutan’s key development partners.

Hydropower has traditionally played an important role in bilateral economic ties. The two countries have worked together on several hydropower projects, with electricity exports forming an important part of Bhutan’s economy.

India has also supported Bhutan through development projects and financial assistance.

Focus on New Areas of Cooperation

In recent years, India and Bhutan have expanded their cooperation beyond hydropower. New areas include digital connectivity, space technology, education, health and infrastructure.

The two countries have also discussed improving connectivity between their territories. Better transport links can support trade and tourism while creating new economic opportunities.

Both governments have continued to emphasise their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Tobgay and Modi Maintain Regular Engagement

Tobgay and Modi have maintained regular diplomatic engagement. Their meetings have covered regional developments as well as bilateral cooperation.

Bhutan occupies an important position in India’s neighbourhood policy. Its geographical location and close historical ties make the relationship significant for both countries.

Bhutan, meanwhile, has continued to work with India on development priorities while maintaining its independent foreign policy.

India-Bhutan Ties Remain Important

Tobgay’s latest comments have once again highlighted the personal dimension of India-Bhutan diplomatic relations. His recollection of the 2019 meeting also reflects the continuity of engagement between the two governments.

The two countries are expected to continue cooperation across traditional areas such as hydropower while expanding ties in technology, connectivity and development.

Tobgay’s remarks about Modi have added a notable personal reference to the broader discussion about the close relationship between Bhutan and India.
