The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has intensified its efforts to complete strategic road projects leading to the Yarlung tri-junction in Arunachal Pradesh’s remote Shi-Yomi district. These roadworks are critical for enhancing India’s border infrastructure, especially in regions bordering China and Tibet. Officials have confirmed that construction has picked up pace under the ongoing Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) to ensure all-weather connectivity to sensitive border areas.

Key Location for Strategic Access
Yarlung, located near the India-China-Tibet tri-junction, holds major geopolitical significance. The region has remained difficult to access due to rugged terrain and limited infrastructure. However, with mounting security concerns and the need for enhanced border surveillance, the government has directed the BRO to speed up road construction in this area.
The current road development is aimed at connecting remote villages like Lamang, Monigong, and Tadadege to district headquarters and eventually to the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Once completed, the road will not only ensure easier troop movement but also empower local communities with better access to healthcare, education, and trade opportunities.
Progress Under Vibrant Villages Programme
According to BRO officials, the project is part of India’s broader push under the Vibrant Villages Programme. The initiative aims to revitalise border villages by improving basic infrastructure such as roads, telecommunications, electricity, and public services.
The Shi-Yomi district, which shares a border with Tibet Autonomous Region, has been identified as a priority zone. The accelerated road construction will also help stem outmigration from the region by creating livelihood and tourism prospects for locals.
“We are committed to delivering critical infrastructure in some of India’s most challenging terrains. Our teams are working round the clock despite heavy monsoon disruptions,” a senior BRO engineer overseeing the project said.
Boost to National Security and Local Development
The road project is not just about improving connectivity. It plays a pivotal role in India’s national security strategy. With the PLA ramping up activity across the border, India’s swift movement of forces and supplies becomes crucial. BRO’s work in Shi-Yomi ensures that remote areas like Yarlung are not left vulnerable or isolated during emergencies.
For the local population, this development means much more than military logistics. Several tribal communities living in the region will benefit from better access to government schemes, medical care, and schools. Farmers will find new markets for their produce, while the scenic landscape holds strong potential for eco-tourism, which could transform the local economy.
Road Projects Overcome Harsh Weather and Terrain
Despite the urgency, the road construction hasn’t been without challenges. The terrain in Shi-Yomi is one of the toughest in Arunachal, with steep gradients, frequent landslides, and extreme weather conditions. The region receives heavy snowfall in winter and incessant rain during the monsoon season, making construction work risky and complicated.
To counter these obstacles, the BRO has deployed specialised equipment and experienced personnel. Construction teams have established temporary camps along the alignment to ensure work continues without major delays. The organisation is also working closely with the local administration and villagers to resolve issues related to land acquisition and logistics.
Government’s Commitment to Border Development
The Centre has reiterated its commitment to border development on various platforms. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently emphasised the need to complete critical infrastructure projects in Arunachal to match China’s development pace across the LAC. He noted that road connectivity would also help integrate border villages more effectively into India’s mainstream economy.
The Arunachal Pradesh government, too, is coordinating actively with BRO officials. Local MLAs and district officials have conducted multiple site visits and are tracking the progress of the Yarlung road project. State Chief Minister Pema Khandu has often stated that infrastructure is key to national security and regional upliftment.
Locals Welcome the Development
Villagers residing in Monigong and other nearby areas have expressed optimism about the ongoing road construction. Many recalled how years of isolation had forced young people to migrate to urban areas in search of jobs. With new roads, they believe employment opportunities, tourism, and government services will finally reach them.
“The road will change everything. We used to walk for hours to reach the nearest town. Now, there’s hope that our children will go to school and access hospitals more easily,” said Tashi Norbu, a resident of the district.
Road Ahead
The road to Yarlung may still be under construction, but its impact is already visible. The BRO’s determined efforts underline India’s strategic focus on the Northeast and its border regions. While much remains to be done, the Yarlung tri-junction project offers a glimpse into the transformation awaiting Arunachal’s frontier areas.
As the project progresses, it will not only reinforce India’s border infrastructure but also fulfil the aspirations of people living in some of the country’s most remote and neglected regions.
