Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir has hinted that he may step away from politics following the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll. Kabir made the remarks after polling ended on Tuesday. He also predicted a victory for the BJP in the constituency.
Kabir made the comments while speaking to reporters after a tense day in Rejinagar. Police detained him during polling after a confrontation at his party office. He had earlier accused the administration of interfering in the election process.
Humayun Kabir Hints at Political Exit
Kabir appeared emotional while speaking about his future in politics. He said he could consider voluntary retirement from politics if the current political situation continues.
The AJUP chief also said he would stay away from the West Bengal Assembly while Suvendu Adhikari remains the Chief Minister. He said he would apologise to the people of Nowda if he takes such a step.
Kabir currently represents Nowda in the Assembly. He had contested from both Nowda and Rejinagar in the 2026 Assembly election. He later retained Nowda and gave up the Rejinagar seat.
Kabir Predicts BJP Victory in Rejinagar
The AJUP chief made another striking statement about the bypoll result. He predicted that the BJP would win the Rejinagar seat.
His prediction came despite AJUP fielding his son, Golam Nabi Azad, as its candidate. Azad contested the bypoll after his father vacated the constituency.
The Rejinagar contest featured candidates from several political groups. The BJP fielded Shankharavh Sarkar. Congress, Trinamool Congress factions, the Left and AJUP also contested the seat.
The constituency has a large minority population. This demographic has made Rejinagar an important seat in the bypoll.
Polling Marked by Tensions
Voting in Rejinagar took place on October 6. The polling process saw several political allegations.
Kabir accused the police of interfering with voting at several booths. Police later detained him following a confrontation at the AJUP office.
Opposition parties also raised allegations of irregularities during polling. They called for fresh polling in the constituency. The BJP rejected the allegations and maintained that the election was conducted properly.
The Election Commission is scheduled to announce the result on October 9.
BJP Campaign Focused on Development
The BJP made development a central part of its Rejinagar campaign. Party leaders highlighted roads, jobs, healthcare and industrial development.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also promised to develop Rejinagar as a model constituency if the BJP candidate wins. The BJP argued that voters should focus on development rather than identity-based political issues.
The party also expressed confidence about its prospects in the constituency.
Rejinagar Result Could Shape Local Politics
The Rejinagar result will carry significance for AJUP as well as the BJP. Kabir won the constituency in the 2026 Assembly election before giving up the seat.
His decision to field his son turned the bypoll into a test for AJUP’s political influence. A BJP victory would mark a major change in the constituency’s political equation.
For Kabir, however, the focus has now shifted beyond the bypoll. His remarks about leaving politics have added another layer to the political developments in Murshidabad.
The final result on October 9 will determine whether the BJP’s campaign translated into votes and how AJUP’s support base responded to the contest.
