The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully conducted the drop trial of the indigenously designed and developed Khagantak-243 long-range glide bomb, marking a significant step forward in India’s efforts to strengthen its precision strike capabilities with domestically developed weapon systems.

The new weapon is designed to carry a 125 kg explosive warhead and can strike targets at distances of up to 180 km under specified release conditions. The successful trial is expected to enhance the IAF’s ability to conduct long-range stand-off strikes while reducing dependence on imported precision-guided munitions.

Khagantak-243 Successfully Tested by IAF

The IAF successfully carried out the drop of the Khagantak-243, an indigenous Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) developed as part of India’s growing defence indigenisation efforts.

The weapon has been developed by Nagpur-based start-up JSR Dynamics Pvt Ltd in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) under the Development-cum-Production Partner model.

The programme represents another example of increasing cooperation between private Indian defence companies and public-sector enterprises in developing advanced military technologies for the armed forces.

125 Kg Warhead and Up to 180 Km Range

The Khagantak-243 carries a 125 kg Mk-81 general-purpose blast fragmentation warhead.

According to available details, the weapon can travel between approximately 144 km and 180 km when released from an altitude of around 12 km at Mach 0.8.

This extended range gives combat aircraft a significant stand-off capability, allowing them to engage targets from long distances without necessarily entering the immediate range of hostile air-defence systems.

The bomb uses aerodynamic lift rather than an onboard propulsion system to travel towards its target, distinguishing glide bombs from conventional cruise missiles.

Su-30MKI Used for Initial Testing

The IAF conducted the initial test of the Khagantak-243 from its Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.

The Su-30MKI remains one of the most important combat platforms in the Indian Air Force and is increasingly being integrated with indigenous weapons and advanced systems.

Future plans reportedly include integrating the Khagantak-243 with other aircraft platforms, including the MiG-29K and Mirage-2000.

Multi-platform integration would give the IAF greater flexibility in deploying the long-range glide bomb for different operational requirements.

Indigenous Weapon Boosts Stand-Off Strike Capability

The successful trial is significant because long-range glide bombs allow aircraft to strike targets while maintaining a greater distance from enemy air-defence systems.

Stand-off weapons have become increasingly important in modern aerial warfare, where advanced surface-to-air missile systems can pose serious risks to fighter aircraft operating close to defended targets.

With a potential reach of up to 180 km, the Khagantak-243 could allow IAF aircraft to target important enemy installations while operating farther away from heavily defended areas.

Such weapons can be used against different types of fixed military targets, depending on the operational configuration and mission requirements.

Limited Series Production Contract Already Placed

The development of the Khagantak-243 has moved beyond the testing stage, with the IAF reportedly placing a limited series production contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd.

The move indicates progress towards the potential operational induction of the indigenous weapon.

The Khagantak family also includes other variants, including the Khagantak-306 and Khagantak-225, which are designed for different operational requirements and weapon configurations.

The development of multiple variants could eventually provide the IAF with a wider range of indigenous precision-guided glide weapons.

Reducing Dependence on Imported Precision Weapons

India has traditionally relied on imported precision-guided weapons for several specialised strike requirements.

The development of indigenous glide bombs is therefore expected to support the country’s broader push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Glide bombs can also offer advantages in terms of production and cost because they do not require the propulsion systems used in cruise missiles. Instead, they use wings and guidance systems to glide towards targets after being released from an aircraft.

India has been developing several indigenous long-range glide weapons in recent years. The DRDO, for example, successfully conducted trials of its 1,000 kg-class Long Range Glide Bomb, Gaurav, from a Su-30MKI aircraft, demonstrating a range close to 100 km during trials in 2025.

Major Step for India’s Defence Indigenisation

The successful test of the Khagantak-243 marks another milestone in India’s expanding indigenous defence technology programme.

The collaboration involving a private start-up and BEL also highlights the growing role of domestic industry in developing advanced weapons for the Indian armed forces.

As the IAF works towards expanding its inventory of indigenous precision-guided munitions, weapons such as the Khagantak-243 could play an increasingly important role in strengthening India’s long-range aerial strike capability.

With the ability to carry a 125 kg warhead and hit targets up to 180 km away under optimal release conditions, the successful test represents a significant advancement in India’s efforts to build a more self-reliant and capable air power force.
