Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha has said India is preparing for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030. Usha discussed the preparations with Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare during a meeting on the sidelines of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
The meeting focused on the future of the Commonwealth Sport movement and India’s preparations for the landmark 2030 edition. Usha described the discussion as productive and said the country was looking ahead to a new chapter for Indian sport and the Commonwealth movement.
Ahmedabad to Host the Centenary Games
India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, which Commonwealth Sport formally confirmed as the host city in November 2025.
The event will mark 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The 2030 edition will therefore carry special significance for the Commonwealth Sport movement.
Ahmedabad’s selection followed the ratification of India’s bid by delegates representing the Commonwealth’s 74 member nations and territories. The announcement placed Gujarat at the centre of preparations for the centenary celebration.
Usha Highlights the Road Ahead
Usha said India’s preparations are already part of the broader planning process for 2030. Her latest meeting with Rukare provided an opportunity to discuss the roadmap for the Games and the future direction of Commonwealth Sport.
The IOA president also recalled India’s campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. She said the experience had strengthened the connection between the conclusion of one Games and preparations for the next edition.
Meanwhile, the formal handover process has already begun. During the Glasgow 2026 closing ceremony, representatives from India received the Commonwealth Games flag as the country began its countdown towards Ahmedabad 2030.
15 to 17 Sports Planned for 2030
Commonwealth Sport has confirmed that between 15 and 17 sports will feature at the Ahmedabad Games.
The initial programme includes athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, table tennis and para table tennis, bowls and para bowls, weightlifting and para powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing.
The final list of sports will be determined through further discussions. Commonwealth Sport has said the complete programme is expected to be announced in 2027.
This process will allow organisers and international sporting bodies to work together on a programme suited to the centenary edition.
Focus on Infrastructure and Sporting Facilities
Preparations for such a large international event will involve extensive infrastructure planning. Ahmedabad and Gujarat will need to ensure that competition venues, accommodation, transportation and other facilities meet the requirements of athletes and officials.
A previous assessment by Commonwealth Sport representatives examined venues, infrastructure and planning in Gujarat. The process forms part of the wider preparations for the 2030 Games.
The Games also provide an opportunity to strengthen sporting infrastructure that can serve athletes and communities beyond the event itself.
India Begins Countdown After Glasgow
The conclusion of the Glasgow Games in August 2026 formally shifted attention towards Ahmedabad.
India finished fourth in the Glasgow 2026 medal table with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. However, Glasgow featured a significantly reduced sports programme compared with previous editions.
Several sports in which India has traditionally competed were not included in the 2026 programme. The Ahmedabad edition is expected to have a broader programme, although the final list remains under development.
Centenary Games Carry Special Significance
The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be the second time India hosts the event. New Delhi previously staged the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
However, the Ahmedabad edition will have a distinct significance because it will mark the centenary of the Games. Commonwealth Sport has described the event as an important moment for the movement as it begins its second century.
For India, the Games will also provide a platform to showcase its sporting facilities, cultural heritage and organisational capabilities.
Roadmap for Ahmedabad 2030
With four years remaining before the Games, preparations are expected to gather pace across multiple areas. Venue development, athlete facilities, transport, event management and the final sports programme will remain important components of the planning process.
At the same time, the IOA and Commonwealth Sport will continue discussions on the operational roadmap.
Usha’s latest meeting with Rukare underlines the ongoing coordination between Indian sporting authorities and Commonwealth Sport. As preparations advance, Ahmedabad will increasingly become the focus of attention ahead of the centenary celebration in 2030.
