JSW Energy has placed a 1,600 MW turbine-generator order for Phase II of its Salboni Thermal Power Project in West Bengal. The latest order completes the placement of turbine-generator equipment orders for the entire 3,200 MW Salboni project.
JSW Thermal Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Energy, entered into a contract with Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited for two steam turbine generators. Each unit has a capacity of 800 MW.
Phase II Order Covers Two 800 MW Units
The latest contract covers two 800 MW steam turbine generators for the second phase of the Salboni project.
Toshiba JSW Power Systems, an associate company of JSW Energy, will manufacture and supply the equipment. Moreover, the company will align the supply with the project’s construction schedule.
As a result, the latest order is expected to support the planned completion and commissioning of the power plant.
Equipment Orders Now Secured for 3,200 MW
The Salboni Thermal Power Project will have a total planned capacity of 3,200 MW. It will consist of four units, with each unit generating 800 MW.
JSW Energy had already placed orders for the first two units in January 2026. The latest contract covers the remaining two units.
Therefore, turbine-generator equipment orders are now secured for all four units of the project.
Salboni Project to Strengthen Power Capacity
The Salboni project represents a major expansion of JSW Energy’s thermal power capacity in West Bengal.
In January 2026, JSW Energy signed a second 1,600 MW power purchase agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited for the Salboni site. This agreement increased the total planned capacity at the location to 3,200 MW.
The company has said the project will use domestic linkage coal allocated to West Bengal under the SHAKTI B (iv) policy. The plant is planned as a supercritical or ultra-supercritical thermal power facility.
Toshiba JSW to Supply Critical Equipment
JSW Energy is sourcing the turbine-generator equipment from Toshiba JSW Power Systems. The company has an existing association with Toshiba JSW.
According to JSW Energy, using an associate company for the key equipment can improve supply-chain certainty. It can also support better coordination during construction.
Furthermore, the arrangement is intended to reduce risks linked to shortages of critical power equipment.
Project Aims to Stay on Construction Schedule
The turbine-generator package will be manufactured and supplied according to the project’s construction schedule.
This approach is important because turbine generators are among the key components required for commissioning a thermal power plant. Consequently, securing the equipment for all four units provides greater visibility for the project’s execution.
JSW Energy has described the latest contract as a step towards strengthening execution certainty for the Salboni project.
Salboni to Become a Major JSW Energy Site
With both phases, Salboni will have 3,200 MW of planned thermal generation capacity.
The company has said the project will benefit from its location and access to coal resources. In addition, the two phases can create operational synergies because they are being developed at the same site.
The completion of the turbine-generator orders marks another step in the development of the Salboni project. Meanwhile, construction and equipment supply will continue according to the planned project schedule.
Focus on Reliable Power Generation
JSW Energy has positioned the Salboni project as part of its broader thermal power expansion. The company has also linked thermal generation with grid stability as India continues to expand renewable energy capacity.
At present, the Salboni project remains under construction. However, securing turbine-generator equipment for all four units provides a key procurement milestone for the 3,200 MW facility.
With the Phase II order now placed, JSW Energy has completed the turbine-generator procurement process for the entire Salboni Thermal Power Project.
