Manipur CM meets Amit Shah, briefs him on peace efforts; Home Minister to visit state this month

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed the prevailing situation in the state, including ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy.

The meeting comes as the Manipur government continues efforts to strengthen security, improve relations between communities and accelerate rehabilitation and development initiatives. Shah is also expected to visit Manipur later this month, although the exact date and itinerary have not yet been finalised.

CM Briefs Amit Shah on Manipur Situation

The Chief Minister has been engaging with the Centre over several issues concerning Manipur, with peace and restoration of normalcy remaining among the key priorities.

The discussions with Shah are significant as the state continues to deal with the effects of prolonged ethnic tensions and security challenges.

Khemchand has emphasised the need for dialogue and cooperation between communities as part of the process of restoring peace across the state.

The state government has also highlighted the importance of maintaining connectivity and ensuring that people can move freely across different areas.

Amit Shah Likely to Visit Manipur in October

The Union Home Minister is expected to travel to Manipur sometime in October, according to Khemchand.

However, the Chief Minister has clarified that the exact date has not been fixed yet. State government spokespersons have also confirmed that discussions regarding Shah’s proposed programme are continuing.

The visit is expected to focus on the security situation, peace efforts, rehabilitation and development projects in the state. NDTV

Earlier plans had indicated that Shah could visit the state to participate in development-related programmes, including the foundation stone ceremony for the new Senapati Medical College. However, the final itinerary has yet to be announced.

Peace Efforts Extend Beyond the Valley

The state government has recently stressed that peace initiatives cannot be limited to the valley areas.

Khemchand has said that lasting peace requires efforts covering both the hill and valley regions of Manipur. The Chief Minister pointed out that the valley accounts for only a small portion of the state’s geographical area and argued that peace efforts must therefore reach communities across the entire state.

The emphasis on hill-valley engagement comes amid continued efforts to rebuild communication and trust between communities affected by the conflict.

Focus on Dialogue and Normalcy

The state government has increasingly highlighted dialogue between communities as an important element of the peace process.

Recent efforts to restore public transport along important routes have also been presented as signs of improving cooperation between communities.

Khemchand has stressed that maintaining connectivity is important for ordinary citizens, businesses and the wider economy, particularly after prolonged disruptions caused by unrest.

The government is also working on rehabilitation measures for people affected by the conflict.

Development Remains Another Priority

Alongside security and peace efforts, the proposed Home Minister’s visit is expected to bring attention to development projects in Manipur.

The state government has highlighted several Centre-backed initiatives, including railway connectivity, national highway projects, border infrastructure and the National Sports University.

The government has also cited the Jiribam-Imphal railway project and the Noney Bridge as major infrastructure developments intended to improve connectivity in the state and the wider Northeast. EastMojo

Security Situation Remains Important

The proposed visit comes at a sensitive time for Manipur, where security concerns remain significant.

Recent tensions in parts of the hill districts have added to the challenges facing the state administration. At the same time, the Centre and state government continue to discuss measures aimed at improving security and advancing the peace process.

The Centre’s approach to agreements involving armed groups and ongoing negotiations with different stakeholders is also expected to remain an important part of the broader security discussion.

Centre-State Coordination in Focus

Khemchand’s meeting with Shah highlights the importance of coordination between the Manipur government and the Union Home Ministry as the state seeks to move towards greater stability.

The proposed October visit will provide another opportunity for the Centre to review developments on the ground and discuss the next steps on peace, rehabilitation, security and development.

For Manipur, the immediate priority remains restoring normalcy while ensuring that peace efforts extend across communities and geographical regions.

The Chief Minister’s discussions with Amit Shah and the Home Minister’s proposed visit therefore come at an important stage in the state’s efforts to address its continuing challenges and build a framework for longer-term peace and development.
