Manipur recently held a grand ceremony at Raj Bhavan to honour 18 brave soldiers and the families of martyrs, recognising their exceptional courage and sacrifice. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla presided over the event, which celebrated the dedication of armed forces personnel and their invaluable contribution to the nation.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla addressed the gathering, expressing deep gratitude for the soldiers’ service and the sacrifices of their families. He said that the people of Manipur are proud of the courage and dedication demonstrated by their armed forces.
During the ceremony, the Governor presented awards, medals, and commendations to the 18 soldiers for their exceptional service. He also felicitated the families of martyrs with mementos and certificates of honour, highlighting the state’s commitment to recognising their sacrifice.
Governor Bhalla emphasized that the nation must never forget the courage of its defenders. “Our soldiers and their families embody the spirit of true patriotism. Their sacrifices ensure that we live in peace and safety,” he said. His address moved many attendees, especially the families of fallen soldiers, who received recognition for their loved ones’ ultimate sacrifices.
Celebrating bravery and gallantry
Among the awardees were Major Maneo Francis PF and Subedar P. Prabin Singha, recipients of the Shaurya Chakra; Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik and Constable (L) Deepak Chingakham, honoured with the Vir Chakra; and several Sena Medal awardees, including Lt Col K. Bijayendra Sharma, Lt Col Mutum Ajoy Meitei, and Maj S. Maningba Rangnamei. Battle casualty honours were conferred posthumously on the late Maj M. Pritam Singh and CFN (L) Wakambam Peter Singh. Lt Col Lemjoy Chara received the Vishisht Seva Medal, while Naik M. Rangayung was mentioned in despatches.
The awards recognise acts of bravery during operations, counter-insurgency missions, and service in challenging terrains. Each citation highlighted the exceptional dedication, courage, and sacrifice of the awardees, showcasing the high standards of service within the armed forces.
Families of martyrs honoured
The most emotional moments came when the families of martyrs were called to the stage. Several mothers, wives, and children accepted awards on behalf of their loved ones, demonstrating both pride and grief.
One mother, whose son died in a counter-insurgency operation, said, “He always believed in serving the nation. Today, his spirit is honoured, and we feel proud of his sacrifice.” Other families expressed similar emotions, thanking the state and army for recognising their loved ones’ contributions.
Governor Bhalla reassured families that the state government would continue supporting welfare initiatives for soldiers and their dependents. He emphasized that honouring their contributions should extend beyond ceremonies into consistent support for their education, health, and livelihood.
Army leadership praises Manipur’s contribution
Senior army officers lauded Manipur’s significant contribution to India’s armed forces. Major General P.S. Grewal highlighted that soldiers from the state have consistently displayed bravery, discipline, and loyalty in national and international missions.
He also praised the Governor and the state administration for organising such a meaningful event, which strengthens the bond between the armed forces and local communities. Officers highlighted that the recognition motivates personnel to perform their duties with dedication and inspires youth to join the forces.

The ceremony included a cultural programme to celebrate the valor and sacrifices of the soldiers. Traditional Manipuri dances and patriotic songs created an emotional atmosphere, reflecting the state’s rich heritage and respect for the armed forces.
