The Kangpokpi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Committee has urged the Manipur government to immediately release the pending Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) assistance meant for displaced families living in relief camps. The committee said delays in disbursing financial aid have created serious hardships for thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who continue to depend on government support for their daily needs.
In a statement, the committee appealed to the state administration to expedite the release of pending funds, stating that timely financial assistance is crucial for ensuring the welfare and dignity of people displaced by the prolonged conflict in Manipur.
Committee Highlights Delay in Financial Assistance
The Kangpokpi IDP Committee expressed concern over the delay in releasing DBT payments, saying many eligible beneficiaries have yet to receive the assistance promised under the government’s relief programme.
According to the committee, displaced families residing in relief camps continue to face significant financial challenges, making the pending assistance essential for meeting basic expenses such as food, healthcare, education, and other daily necessities.
The committee urged the authorities to address the issue on priority and ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their dues without further delay.
Relief Camps Continue to Shelter Thousands
Since the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur, thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and seek shelter in relief camps across different districts. Many families continue to live in temporary accommodations while waiting for conditions to improve sufficiently for their safe return.
The committee said that despite ongoing relief efforts by the government and various humanitarian organisations, displaced families remain heavily dependent on financial assistance to sustain their livelihoods.
It noted that regular and timely DBT payments play a critical role in supporting camp residents as they cope with prolonged displacement.
Appeal to the State Government
The committee appealed to the Manipur government to take immediate administrative steps to release all pending DBT assistance and streamline the disbursement process to avoid similar delays in the future.
It also requested the authorities to maintain transparent communication with beneficiaries regarding payment schedules and the status of pending transfers.
According to the committee, prompt action would provide much-needed relief to vulnerable families who continue to face uncertainty and economic hardship.
Importance of Direct Benefit Transfer
Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) has become one of the primary mechanisms through which relief assistance is provided to internally displaced families in Manipur. The system enables financial aid to be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, reducing delays and improving transparency.
The committee acknowledged the importance of the DBT system but stressed that its effectiveness depends on timely and uninterrupted disbursement of funds.
It said delayed payments undermine the purpose of the programme and increase the difficulties faced by displaced households.
Humanitarian Concerns Remain Significant
The committee highlighted that many internally displaced families continue to struggle with limited income opportunities while residing in relief camps. Children require continued access to education, elderly residents need medical care, and families must meet daily living expenses despite prolonged displacement.
The organisation stressed that financial assistance remains one of the most important forms of support for affected families until durable rehabilitation and resettlement measures are implemented.
It urged both the state administration and relevant agencies to prioritise the welfare of displaced communities.
Call for Comprehensive Rehabilitation
Beyond the release of pending DBT assistance, the committee reiterated the need for long-term rehabilitation measures for internally displaced persons. It called for sustained government support in areas such as housing, livelihood restoration, healthcare, education, and community rebuilding.
The committee said financial assistance should form part of a broader rehabilitation strategy aimed at helping displaced families rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
It also appealed for continued coordination between government departments, humanitarian agencies, and community organisations to address the evolving needs of affected populations.
Government Urged to Act Swiftly
The Kangpokpi IDP Committee concluded its appeal by urging the Manipur government to release the pending DBT assistance at the earliest, stating that thousands of displaced families are relying on the support to meet essential household expenses.
As relief and rehabilitation efforts continue across the state, the committee maintained that timely financial assistance is critical to reducing the hardships faced by internally displaced persons. It expressed hope that the authorities would respond promptly to the appeal and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive their pending DBT payments without further delay, while continuing broader efforts towards rehabilitation, recovery, and lasting peace in Manipur.
