Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh has said the state police department is considering new policy measures to recognise and encourage sportspersons serving in the force.
The announcement came during a felicitation programme at Police Headquarters in Imphal on Thursday. The event honoured Asian Games 2026 silver medallists Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Naorem Roshibina Devi.
Both athletes serve in Manipur Police in sports-related positions. Chanu is an Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports), while Roshibina Devi serves as Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sports).
The proposed policy aims to recognise outstanding sporting achievements among police personnel and encourage them to continue pursuing excellence.
DGP Highlights Need to Nurture Sporting Talent
Congratulating the athletes, Mukesh Singh praised their dedication, perseverance and commitment to their respective disciplines.
He said their achievements brought pride to Manipur Police, the state and the country.
The DGP also highlighted the importance of identifying emerging talent and providing encouragement to young sportspersons.
He said the proposed policy initiatives would help recognise athletes within the police force for their achievements and contributions to sports.
However, the department has not yet announced specific provisions or implementation details of the proposed measures.
Mirabai Chanu and Roshibina Devi Receive ₹1 Lakh Each
Manipur Police presented cash rewards of ₹1 lakh each to the two athletes in recognition of their performances at the 20th Asian Games in Japan.
Mirabai Chanu won silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event. Her performance included a combined lift of 198kg.
Roshibina Devi secured silver in the women’s 60kg Sanda event in Wushu.
The felicitation recognised their achievements and highlighted their contribution to Indian sports.
Senior police officers attended the ceremony alongside Lamlai Assembly constituency MLA K Ibomcha Singh.
Athletes Share Their Sporting Journeys
During an interaction session, Chanu and Roshibina Devi shared experiences from their sporting careers.
They spoke about the challenges they faced, their preparation and memorable moments from the Asian Games.
