Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has described the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll as a fight to safeguard constitutional rights and ensure inclusive development. Addressing a campaign rally at Batamari on September 30, Gogoi expressed confidence that Congress would retain the constituency.
Gogoi said the rights and interests of the people, along with genuine development, remained central to the party’s campaign. He urged voters to support Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora.
The bypoll has drawn attention as Congress and the BJP-led NDA present competing narratives on governance, development and constitutional issues.
Gogoi Emphasises Constitutional Rights
Addressing supporters at Batamari, Gogoi said Congress was fighting to protect the constitutional rights of people and promote inclusive development.
He maintained that Nagaon voters would continue supporting Congress, which has represented the constituency since 2019.
Gogoi’s remarks placed constitutional rights and people’s interests at the centre of the party’s campaign.
Congress Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood also addressed the rally. He appealed to voters to remain united against what he described as the ruling dispensation’s anti-people policies.
Masood called for defending democracy and the Constitution, framing the Nagaon contest as part of a wider political discussion on justice and constitutional rights.
Sonowal Highlights NDA’s Development Record
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented a different campaign narrative during rallies in Morigaon and Batadrawa.
He said BJP-led NDA governments at the Centre and in Assam had created new opportunities for development, enterprise and employment.
Sonowal credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with advancing infrastructure and economic development.
He cited road and bridge construction, industrial investment and employment generation as examples of the government’s work.
The Union minister also highlighted the Tata Group’s proposed ₹27,000-crore semiconductor facility at Jagiroad.
Sonowal argued that infrastructure spending had changed Nagaon’s development landscape and urged voters to support BJP candidate Devasish Sharma.
BJP Fields Former Nagaon District Commissioner
The BJP has fielded former Nagaon district commissioner Devasish Sharma in the bypoll.
Sharma resigned from his administrative position earlier in September to enter electoral politics.
Sonowal said Sharma’s experience in the district would help him understand local issues and serve the constituency.
He also criticised Congress, accusing the party of pursuing divisive politics and neglecting development-related concerns.
These remarks formed part of the NDA’s campaign pitch, which has focused on infrastructure, employment and governance.
Why the Nagaon Lok Sabha Seat Is Vacant
The by-election became necessary after sitting Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party and joined the BJP ahead of the Assam Assembly elections in April.
Bordoloi subsequently won the Dispur Assembly seat and became an MLA.
Congress is now seeking to retain Nagaon with Sibamoni Bora as its candidate, while the BJP has nominated Devasish Sharma.
The contest has brought senior leaders from both sides into the constituency.
Polling Scheduled for October 6
The Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election will take place on October 6, while counting of votes is scheduled for October 9.
Campaigning has centred on constitutional rights, inclusive development, infrastructure, employment and governance.
Gogoi has highlighted Congress’s position on constitutional protections and people’s interests, while Sonowal has emphasised the NDA government’s development record.
The competing campaign messages have made Nagaon a prominent focus of Assam’s political activity ahead of polling.
